-- 8 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 13, 1999 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Forget about double-spaced writing paper, staples and paste, and brightly-coloured binders; the future of school projects is on the world wide web. That's the word from two enterprising Scugog students, a brother and sister who earned 'extra marks this past year by creating web pages to deliver their messages to class mates. Caitlin Krempowich, 13, and her 12-year-old brother Matthew, impressed teachers and fellow students at S.A. Cawker Public School in Port Perry with their fresh take on school assignments. Caitlin delivered an essay on Nelson Mandela for an English assign- ment, and supplemented it by creating a web page on which she posted a variety of pictures and pieces of information on the South African president. Matthew showed his class- mates the web page he assem- bled for his Grade 6 science project on the concept of light years, then encouraged them to print out any information they liked from the site. He was aided in his effort by Caitlin, who taught herself to assemble web sites using infor- mation she gleaned from man- uals and the internet. "I was bored with writing it all out, and I wanted to find a new way," said Caitlin in explaining her novel approach Web presents new o to the Black History Month assignment. "I pretty much learned as I went along, because I didn't know much about it," she said, holding up a copy of a book entitled Dummies 101: Creating Web Pages. When Matthew asked for help with a page for his astron- omy project, Caitlin was happy to help. Together they spent hours finding the information they needed both from texts and on the internet, then went through the complicated and sometimes tedious process of building the site, complete with text and graphics. The result was a project that blew away his classmates and earned Matthew top marks for initiative and presentation, said science teacher Jim Justynski. "I was just so impressed after he presented it to the class," said Mr. Justynski, who said the other kids in the class were enthralled by Matthew's presentation. "I think they learn a lot bet- ter with this hands-on type of project," he said. "It shows you the whole new range of opportunities open to them; we should encourage that." In fact, over the summer, the majority of the terminals at S.A. Cawker's computer centre will be going on-line, allowing students more access to the internet and its possibilities.
