"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 20, 1999 - 5 Steady as she goes for new Rotary president By Chris Hall Port Perry Star It will be steady as she goes for Port Perry's Rotary Club this year. "We're going to contin- ue along the lines of what we've been doing in the past. We're not going to change much from what we did last year because everything seemed to work out okay," said recently-elected president John Bouwhuis. "We have a really good club here that does a lot of work for the community, but sometimes the com- munity doesn't realize exactly all that we do," said Mr. Bouwhuis. "We need to make the public better aware of what we do and who we are." A native of Holland, Mr. Bouwhuis and his family immigrated to Geraldton, where they lived before moving to Barrie. He later graduated from . Hamilton's McMaster University with a degree in geology. For the past 25 years he has been employed by Cashway, including the last four in Port Perry as manager. He first got involved with the Rotary Club in South Hampton, and con- tinued his involvement upon arriving here. "I joined the Rotary Club here in Port Perry because I enjoyed myself Full General Repairs; \ i) L Outgoing Rotary president Myles O'Riordan (left) presents gavel to new chief John Bowhuis. so much in South Hampton... when Chuck Dewhirst invited me to one of the meetings when I first moved here I agreed, because I knew what the club was all about," said Mr. Bouwhuis. "You can't just transfer from one club to another; you have to be invited to join because they're all different." Mr. Bouwhuis says his big goals during his term as president include get- ting involved in a student exchange, honouring pre- vious commitments made by the club, attempting to increase the group's mem- bership by at least four members and keeping the books in order for the new millennium. "I really like this club and what it stands for... I really enjoy helping out in the community and I think the Rotary Club is a good way to go about it," said the married father of five children. "The club does a lot of good things here -- Aquarama and Snowarama for Easter Seals, a seniors' dinner, golf tournament, 50/50 draw -- and I'm glad to be a part of it."
