LETTERS Rules of the road matter to group To the Editor: In the June 29 issue of The Port Perry Star, a letter to the editor expressed dissatisfaction with receipt of a Roadwatch report. (Roadwatch warnings should apply to the law breakers). From the letter, the details of the report are not entirely clear and we do not intend to debate its relative merits. Our concern rests with the impression the writer appears to be conveying: That failure to obey a stop. sign is a relatively minor concern. In our opinion, such an act is a form of aggressive driving leading to serious consequences. Over the past few years the numbers have remained quite consistent in Durham Region. Approximately 54 per cent of collisions occur at intersections. Roughly 500 collisions per year happen at unsignalized intersections, many with tragic results. While we're certain that the causes are many and varied, a major cause is the "quick look" and the "rolling stop." How often has the statement "the car came from out of nowhere" been heard? The other car didn't come from "out of nowhere." The driver failed to come toa com- plete stop and adequately note conditions before entering the intersection. In the time it takes for the quick look, an approaching vehicle can be hidden behind your doorpost, trees or other obstructions. Are the risks really worth the time saved by rolling through? Janet Vendrig, Scugog RoadWatch Committee A great Choral Society show To the Editor: Guys and Dolls is my favourite musical. I have seen it many times, including at places where they charge too darn much money. I don't think I have ever enjoyed it more than the recent Scugog Choral Society pro- duction. Thank you Michele Jones, Alice Lee, Carol Salamone and Wayne Henry. Who is Kyffen Gaudet, and what is her next role? She was a pure delight! Kudos as well to Mike Evans, Dave Cardinal, Dave Silvestri and Andrea Jackson. Indeed, if you were part of this show, congratulations. Ed Daigle Prince Albert Remember When? Editor's Notepad by Jeff Mitchell SOME HOCKEY NEWS! QUICK! At this moment, it is mid-July. | have just arrived in my car, having listened to the radio on the way. Following the news came the sports report, as usual. And damn nearly every item -- with the exception of the British Open and the Molson Indy -- pertained to hockey. Pierre Turgeon has signed a three-year deal with the Blues! Pat Quinn now has two jobs, while many of us have none! Wheeee! Is it just me, or are we getting a little too nutty about hockey? The season ended just the other day, and do you know what the final item on the aforementioned sports cast was? Yep: The National Hockey League's regular season schedule begins Oct. 1. The Toronto Maple Leafs see their first action in Montreal on Saturday, Oct. 2. So as of this publication date, you have to wait only 72 days -- seventy-two days! -- for the hockey season to resume. Bob Cole and Harry Neale. Don Cherry and Ron McLean. And JOE BOWEN!!! and whatever unfortunate schmoe finds himself sit- ting beside that human foghorn. For months and months and months and months and months and months and months. Epic Wednesday night clashes between the Nashville Predators and the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. Recurring panic attacks when the Leafs drop two in a row. More speculation on What's Wrong With The fives. Don't get me wrong. | like ->no: | love hockey. It has played a vital role in my growth and development. Years ago | would go to the basement with my hockey stick and a puck and set up targets to shoot at, because that's what Bobby Orr did when he was a kid. | withstood ridicule and hatred for wearing my Habs' colours while growing up in a small town that would have elected Davey Keon Mayor For Life if he'd said he'd like that. | have shelled out $80 for greys to see Wayne Gretzky play. On nights when | work late during the playoffs, | listen to games on the car radio on the way home. | arose at 3 a.m. during the winter Olympics a couple of years ago to watch Canada play, then slipped back into bed for an hour before rising when the alarm clock rang to go to work. But it is July. From October to June we are captivated and consumed by the game, and care to hear about little else, save for the NFL and updates on road conditions. The snow and the pucks will fly for months and months and etc. Each Saturday morning we will haul our camera tags, hangovers and aching bones into the local rink for Atom tournaments. We will fuss over the MoJacks, and hate the Bruins. Can we maybe take a break for now? | know that by and large | am alone in this sentiment, and that many of you see nothing wrong with leading the sports report with news of the preposterous amount of money offered people like Stefan Quintall. Who? Exactly. Oh, well. See you at the rink, eh?
