"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - TUesday, August 10, 1999 - 3 Nursing hom By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Community Nursing Home in Port Perry has applied to the provincial Ministry of Health for an expansion. A proposal put forth this summer addresses the needs of current res- idents of the 75-bed facility, and makes plans to accommodate more local seniors in the future, said administra- tor Kim Mitchell. She said that the pri- 'mary recommendation put forth by a steering committee comprised of staff and community members was that beds be made available to seniors in their own community. "Through our research we found it's really important to keep people from Port Perry in Port Perry," said Ms Mitchell. She said an expan- sion would help the nursing home accommo- date more seniors closer to their home communi- ties. Having seniors closer to home is also a concern for relatives, who are more able to visit and provide sup- port for residents if they're not in homes in distant communities. The current place- ment system has would- be residents indicating the area in which they'd like to be placed, and waiting lists are created for . homes. Durham Access to Care assigns beds to residents as they become available. There are currently no empty beds at Community Nursing Home. An expansion to the east of the Port Perry property, at the back of the existing home, would also: Q Allow for construc- tion of a chapel. Ms Mitchell said that as the application is in its preliminary stages, she's unable to release specific details about the expansion plans, including the number of beds that would be added. "There are so many variables right now that I don't want to specu- late," she said. The initial proposal was submitted to the ministry in July.
