TTS "A Family Tradition for 133 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 24, 1999 - 9 At Scugog Christian School New principal eager to begin school year By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Students at Scugog Christian School in Prince Albert will be greeted by a new face when classes resume next month. Tony DeKoter has taken over as principal at the small, private Christian school, and is eager for Sept. 7 to roll around and for classes to begin. "I'm really looking for- ward to the challenge here, at a new school, and I hope all the students had a great summer and are excited to return to school," Mr. DeKoter said last week. An educator for 29 years, Mr. DeKoter was principal at a Christian school in St. Thomas before landing a job here in Scugog. "I' applied for the job, and had my interview here last February. You're not automatically placed by the school board," he said, referring to the Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools, which governs over more than 70 Christian schools in the province. Taking his place at the helm of the local Christian school at the beginning of August, Mr. DeKoter is in the process of getting a feel for the school's dynamics. "'m anxious to see what's here, to get my feet wet... I'm particularly interested in computers, and would like to get the school on-line," he said. Working at a small school, with relatively few staff -- Scugog Christian School has an average enrollment of 75 students from Kindergarten to J: Tony DeKoter, the new principal at Scugog Christian School in Prince Albert, is eager for the school year to begin in September. In addition to his administrative duties, he'll spend a lot of time in the classroom. Grade 8, who are taught by a total of six teachers -- Mr. DeKoter is also excited about spending plenty of time in the classroom. "I'll be in the classroom between 60 and 80 per cent of the time; I'll take 'two mornings a week to do my administration duties." He'll teach most sub- jects to the senior students -- Grades 7 and 8 -- includ- ing phys ed, geography, history and science. Mr. DeKoter says that will be the time he'll enjoy the most. "I really enjoy teaching the kids, being there and helping them learn. The best part of the job is working with the kids, that's why you get into education." As for John Lunshof, the former principal of Scugog Christian School, Mr. DeKoter says they'll be in touch. "Actually, he got my old job in St. Thomas. People think we just did a swap, but it didn't really work out that way," he said. "But it'll work out well because we can ask each other questions and get some help if we need it."
