"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 24, 1999 - 23 The Brooklin Redmen returned to their home floor for game five in Whitby last Wednesday night (Aug. 18) facing possible elimination at the hands of the Brampton Excelsiors. The Excelsiors won game four on Aug. 16 by a score of 8-6 and were ready to wrap up the series on the road. To fans in the area it appeared that Brooklin came out somewhat tentative as the visitors jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the period was half over. The home team could not find the net in the first frame and went to the dressing room down by a score of 2-0. The second period was the complete opposite to the first. Daryl Gibson started the Brooklin scoring three min- utes into the middle frame and Steve Toll added one with two minutes remaining to even the game at 2-2 going into the third period. In the third, Dan Teat and Chris Langdale scored two for the visitors to put them up 4-2 and the crowd was visibly down and ready to write off the season. Less than a minute after Langdale's goal, Steve Toll put one in for the Redmen to start the comeback. Jonas Derks was the hero on the night as he scored an unassisted goal on a great second effort with less than two minutes remaining on the clock to Redmen try to stay alive as Brampton pays a visit In a crucial Game 5 tie the game and eventually send it to overtime. The Redmen took control in the full 10-minute overtime with rookie Craig Ainsworth scoring the winner with 90 seconds off the clock. Gary Rosyski added one late and Daryl Gibson got his second of the night with an empty- netter with 15 seconds on the clock. Knab took both ends of the heat races and earned a hard fought victory over the #77 of Bruce Knapp in the feature. Bob Kish, Dan Robinson and Dave Lee rounded out the top five. Sunday's race saw the return of Whitby's Craig Perry to the victory stand. The #37 Barracuda of Perry's was challenged for the entire 20 laps by Bruce Knapp, but would not be bested. Kish earned another third place finish, points leader Knab was fourth and Dave Lee picked up his second fifth place finish of the week- end. Acton's Darrin Wrigglesworth reinforced his position atop the Horner Automotive Modified standings by taking an impressive win in Sunday's open-wheeled feature. Dwight Brown and Andy Warbutton were relentless in their pursuit of Wrigglesworth but had to settle for next-in-line. Adrian Foster finished in a season's best fourth place slightly ahead of John Teune and Bob Broad.
