8 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 24, 1999 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Security is expected to be tight at an Oshawa court later this week when the three police officers | charged in connection with the | shooting death of a Sunderland man make an appearance. Durham Regional Constable Al Robins, along with York Region Police Constables Randy Martin and Mike Hoskin, return to court on Thursday to set a date for a pre-trial hearing. All three were charged after the Special Investigations Unit's inves- tigation into the Dec. 28, 1998 shooting death of Tony Romagnuolo, a 44-year-old Sunderland man, and the wounding of his 17-year-old son Rocco. Police Officers charged after shooting back in court Const. Martin was also wounded during the incident. While it is still unclear what hap- pened the night of the incident, it is alleged that Mr. Romagnuolo was shot and killed by a police officer during an altercation outside his home. As a result of the incident, Durham Const. Al Robins was charged with aggravated assault and causing bodily harm with intent by discharging a firearm in connec- tion with the gunshot wound to Rocco Romagnuolo's stomach. . York Region Const. Randy Martin faces a charge of second degree mur- der while his partner, Mike Hoskin, is charged with one count of assault with a weapon and one count of careless use of a firearm. Burned-out truck found in township Suspects elude air, ground search by Durham police An extensive police search for sus- pects, stretching from Blackstock to Oshawa, came up with nothing last week. Durham Regional Police officers from 17 Division in Oshawa were on patrol near "The Pits" on Russell 'Rd. near Blackstock around 2:25 a.m. Thursday (Aug. 19) when they came across a burned-out truck sitting in the middle of the road. The truck was later identified as a 1998 Ford F-150 pickup with dealer plates, stolen from Cobourg. The officers called in the assistance of Durham's helicopter unit, Air One, and two other cruisers. Cars travelling in the area were stopped and motorists questioned. During their search, police encoun- tered a red Cavalier travelling "at a high rate of speed", said Staff-Sgt. Mike Ewles, an officer at Port Perry's 26 Division station. Officers followed the Cavalier, but "did not pursue them at high speeds... they watched them", said Staff-Sgt. Ewles. The three occupants in the car eventually bailed out of the car at Russett Park, near Russett Ave. and Taunton Rd. in Oshawa, police say. The canine unit and more officers were called in to participate in the search, but no suspects were found. Both the Ford truck and Cavalier have been impounded by Durham Police and have been fingerprinted. ADhite's Fax & Photocopy Services Faxes - Photocopies - Word Processing een | PUNCH IT!
