As the 18 car field came to the green flag to begin the 50 lap feature event, six cars, including the #49 Monte Carlo of current OSCAAR points lead- er Rob Clarke were involved in a front straight melee. With the track completely blocked, the race was quickly red- flagged. When the track even- tually went to a yellow situation and the clean-up continued, Clarke's racer was towed into the pits where the Spenser Steel crew went to work. Using hammers and a cutting torch, the damaged pieces of the #49 car were removed and reshaped with Clarke about to Assuming the lead after an impressive run up from the back of the field was the bat- tered car of Clarke's. Clarke then led the pack to line by Port Hope's John Owen and Stu Robinson. Uxbridge's Al Thomson and West Lee Talons were next to the stripe. In the Mosport MVP III Bonus Challenge, take the car, which now resembled an open 'wheeled Modified, back into the fray, just as the green flag flew. Rob Clarke was once again the big winner, claiming the lion's share of the $10,000 purse. Pee Wee Mike Bricknell in | the MVP Trading #69 took the early lead from his pole position but on the fifth circuit was overtaken by Stu Robinson Jr. heading into turn one. Robinson held onto the top spot until the 20th lap when he was forced to pit to replace a flat tire. the checkered flag, surviving three caution period restarts along the way. It was Clarke's third Mosport feature win of the season. Mosport regular Pee Wee Evans endured a race- long battle with Wayne Keeling to claim the runner-up spot. These two were followed to the Evans took home the second place money with West Lee Talons accumulating enough points to earn the thi place cheque. Port Perry's Rod Sauder claims two feature wins as well as three heat victories in the Horner Automotive open wheeled Modified class. Current series points leader Steve Knab (#90) is awarded the Terry Cullwick Auto/Fortune Investments Challenger feature win after original victor, Craig Perry (#37) is disqualified in the tech- nical inspection. And finally, West Lee Talons held off a charging Rod Sauder for the feature win in the Advantage Personnel Late Model class. Port's Jackie Pashley takes top spot in womens' 10K race Pashley impresses at Giant Five event Local Port Perry mountain bikers took on 200 Ontario riders at the Alpha Racing Giant Five race this past Sunday, and posted some very impressive results. With riders ranging in age from eight years to 60, the challenges were major and the local riders proved they can ride with the best. With competitors from Guelph through Trenton on hand to chal- lenge the rigors of the Durham Forest trails near Uxbridge, the competition was intense. Local rid- ers who made major efforts in their climb up the competitive ladder in various age and distance categories included Tom Wojcik, Derek Versluys and Shawn Lunney. Of special note was the first place finish by Jackie Pashley in the 10 kilometer race for 12 to 15 year old women. This was Jackie's first mountain bik® race, and judg- ing by this result, it shouldn't be her last. Equally impressive was the eighth place finish by Aaron Combdon in the grueling 40 kilo- meter enduro event. Facing off against a competitive field of veter- an and pro riders, Combdon served notice that he is not to be taken lightly in these meets. The riding conditions were excep- tionally good for this year's event, and helped many riders erase the memories of last year's rain and mud fest. The course provided a full range of single and double track sections, and a good mix of chal- lenging uphill climbs and gnarly down hill nail-biters. There was an especially good spectator turnout at the event, with an estimate of over 150 spec- tators on hand to witness the com- petition. Following the completion of the race, top place finishers received their awards, and over 50 draw prizes were handed out to riders. All riders received a com- memorative t-shirt, plus lunch and refreshments as part of their regis- tration. This event was the fourth in the Giant Five Series of competitions put on by Alpha Racing. With Giant Bicycle as the major sponsor, riders compete over the spring, summer and into the early fall, with the final competition slated for Oct. 17 near Bethany. At this season finale, the past champions will be vying for one of two $1,800 Giant bicycles, while all participants will be eligible for another $1,800 Giant mountain bike. Meanwhile, riders in the Port Perry area are continuing to train for the upcoming races this season and in anticipation of a strong finish at the last event on Oct. 17. 'With riders such as Pashley and Combdon and the efforts of the other young and improving riders, the Port Perry area mountain bike community is well served at the Giant Five Series. For more details in the final - event on Oct. 17 riders and specta- tors are encouraged to call Alpha Racing at (905) 986-0959, Fax 905- 986-1305 or e-mail alpha@speed- line.ca.
