A massive manhunt was launched in the hamlet of Columbus on Saturday, Aug. 28, after a 37-year-old Port Perry man banged on the door of a Columbus area home and told the residents that he and his compan- ion had been shot. Police found the man suffering from shotgun wounds, and also discov- ered a 35-year-old Oshawa man under a blanket in a car, bound and suffering from shot- gun wounds to the leg. Police arrested other occupants in the car. Police later seized hydroponics growing equipment and lab equipment used in the production of marijuana and hash oil. Marijuana plants worth $120,000 were found hy police in the area of the shootings. It is alleged that the two shooting victims had been in a field where marijuana was growing when the shootings occurred. Police stated at the time that they believed the shootings to be drug related. Heavily armed mem- bers of the Tactical Support Unit, K-9 ser- vice dogs Lex and Chase and the Durham heli- copter, Air-1, all con- verged on the scene as a search for the gunmen began. After surrounding a suspect house police removed the only occu- pant, a 10-year-old-girl, and continued the search until two suspects were found hiding in a camper located in a barn on the property. Police eventually arrested a total of four male suspects. Thirty-four-year-old Stephen Paul Turner, 3622 Simcoe Street North, Barry Joseph Rodgers, 32, of Oxford Street, Warren Branton, 28, of 4391 Simcoe Street North and 22-year-old Jeffery Nicholas of Nonquon Drive in Oshawa, all face charges of forcible confinement, use of a firearm while committing an indictable offense, possession of weapons dangerous to the public, production of a controlled substance and production of a con- trolled substance for the purpose of trafficking. In addition to these charges, Mr. Rodgers also faces two counts each of attempted mur- der, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, dis- charging a fire arm, aggravated assault and use of a firearm while committing an indictable offense. Mr. Branton is addi- tionally charged with kidnapping while using a firearm, threatening death, two counts of dis- charging a firearm, aggravated assault, pointing a firearm, and illegal use of a firearm.
