Melody Franssen wonders why the motorist who struck her 13-year-old daughter didn't stick around after check- Ing out the injured teen, and why a num- ber of people who witnessed the incident disappeared after police officers arrived at the scene. According to Holly, who starts Grade 9 at Port Perry High School this week, the walk sign was flashing and traffic seemed to be clear when she attempted to cross Simcoe St. at the busy intersec- tion at Hwy. 7A just before 2 p.m. on Aug. "I was just coming back from Mac's Milk and getting a slushee when I went to cross Simcoe St. on my bike," said Holly, who lives just west of the intersec- tion on Scugog St. The girl was on her bike and was beginning to cross the road when a northbound vehicle came to the intersec- tion and made a right turn, heading east on Hwy. 7A. The northbound light was red at the time. "The (crosswalk) sign said go, and when 1 went to go across she came around the corner and hit me," said Holly. The girl was tossed from her sister's new 18-speed mountain bike to the pave- ment. She suffered scrapes to her left arm, and hurt her left shoulder. She wasn't wearing a helmet, and luckily received no head injuries. "(The driver) parked her car and helped me up," recalled Holly. "Then she asked me if I was all right and another guy came running up and asked me if I was okay, too. When I told the woman I was all right she gave me $3 for a new slushee and left." The motorist is described by Holly as a "younger woman in her 30s" driving a newer white car. A woman standing nearby called police, who showed up shortly after. "I came out of the store with my sec- ond slushee and the cops were there. I didn't even know they were called," Holly said, adding that the officers asked her a series of questions, and then left. Mrs. Franssen is bewildered and angered by the turn of events. "It's quite confusing. Why would these people call the police and leave, or why would you witness an accident and leave?" she asked. "I'm a little ticked off at the lady who left -- I don't understand why she would leave and not give my daughter her name in case we needed to contact her later. What if Holly's injuries were worse than they first thought? "I'm just hoping that people are a lit- tle more cautious and watch out for chil- dren on their bikes, especially with school back now," said Mrs. Franssen. "It's dangerous out there for them." op pen dent. Lil Holly Franssen was left shaken but not seriously hurt after being knocked from her bike at the intersection of Simcoe St. and Hwy. 7A. She says the driver of the car that hit her stopped briefly, then left the scene of the acci- 3 Annual Members' ur two plays this year are; olden Pond" - end of Oc Borelians Community Theatre Wine and Cheese Gathering NEW MEMBERS WELCOME!
