14- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 21, 1999 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Residents say school parking is a problem By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star The start of a new school year has brought back some old problems for residents of Ottawa St. in Port Perry: Traffic congestion. According to one resident, the problem has gone beyond the point of simply being a nuisance, and is putting public safety at risk. And he wants Scugog Township councillors to do something about it immediate- y. In a letter to the council Keith Charles writes that the congestion is so bad from school buses and parents parked along both sides of the street waiting for children, that emergency vehicles would have difficulty getting to a home on the street. This "could cost somebody their life and entail litigation. Just last week, a child was very nearly hit by a bus, the driver being unable to see around a parked SUV," Mr. Charles wrote in a recent letter to the mayor and councillors. And he claims that vehicles parked on the shoulders of the street are causing damage to lawns. Mr. Charles says that similar com- plaints have been raised in previous years, but that nothing has been done to correct the situation. He wants the council to "severely restrict parking... on either side of Ottawa St. from Queen St. south to Highway 7A." He suggests this restriction be in force from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Members of council were some- what surprised when the two letters of complaint were presented at their meeting last Monday evening. "My understanding was that we were to work out a plan suitable to all concerned," said Regional Councillor Ken Gadsden. And Mayor Doug Moffatt said these problems are always at their worst at the begin- ning of a new school year. But councillors instructed admin- istrator Earl Cuddie and roads superintendent Ronn MacDonald to address the problems by holding negotiations with senior staff at R. H. Cornish Public School. Mr. Cuddie said a report should be ready in time for council to take action at its next scheduled meeting. 181 Perry St. PO Box 780 NOTICE is due for REALTY AND BUSINESS TAX Second Instalment PAYABLE SEPT. 28, 1999 Please pay promptly to avoid penalty If you have not received your final tax notice, please telephone the Municipal Tax Office at (905) 985-7346 Failure to receive a Tax Notice does not eliminate the responsibility for the payment of tax and penalty.
