rr 20 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 21, 1999 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" St. John's staff call for solution to 'funding mess' Non-teaching staff at the St. John's School for Boys in Uxbridge are call- ing on Ontario Education Minister Janet Ecker to clear up what they describe as a funding mess that has left more than 70 young offenders without schooling for three weeks. After giving notice this past winter, the Durham Separate School Board stopped teaching young inmates at the secure custody facility, operated by 'the Christian Brothers. The Durham Public School Board has called on the Ministry of Education to arrange funding so it can hire teachers, but without suc- cess. "Everybody seems to have forgotten these 70 kids," said Charlie Bryans, president of Local 361 of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union. - "If we're going to reha- bilitate them, they'd bet- ter get an education. They need some success. "The Minister of Education has to step in," he said. "Under the law, Bi ony A FEW DAYS LEFT EB! Mr. Bryans said staff and managers at St. John's want to see teach- ers back in the school immediately. -"This is an educational emergency in the minis- ter's own riding," he said. "We're calling on Ms Ecker to deal with this problem directly." Mr. Bryans said bore- dom and frustration among students is creat- ing an unhealthy work environment for his mem- bers - and that could lead to trouble. "Eventually, staff are going to burn out. And when you have burnout in a correctional facility, that's when you end up with problems." Diabetes group resume meeting on Sept. 29 The Port Perry Diabetes Support Group begins its fall sessions this month. On Wednesday, Sept. 29 Optometrist Dr. Darryl Workman will present "care of your eyes." He will explain the impor- tance of good eye care and how having dia- betes affects changes in your eyes. Diabetes is a silent and potentially dev- astating disease. Changes can occur in the back of the eye that you are not aware of, because there is no pain and often no change to your immediate vision. The group will begin the fall with a free dinner meeting, catered by dietician Joan Hood. The din- ner will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Education Resource Room in Lakeridge Health Port Perry Hospital. There is limited space (35 people) so you must register by phone with Joan Hood at 985-4302 or Norm Sartin at 985- 1801 no later than Monday, Sept. 27. There will be a dia- betes nurse educator and dietician present to help answer any other questions. A short business/plan- ning meeting will take place after Dr. Workman's presenta- tion. Start the fall off right; take advantage of great education and renew old friend- ships too. i i ESS a th 22
