The process of return- ing the old bell to the Burns Presbyterian Church began in 1988, when it was suggested that the Kirk Guild take on the project because so little was saved from the . fire. In 1990, the group found the bell at the Pickering Museum, took some measurements and approached the museum board about reclaiming their bell. After much discussion, and a few letters to the museum board, the group obtained permission to move the bell, which they did in November, 1990. "We moved the bell to Ron Death's apple shed - with a truck and tractor," recalled Mr. Burgess, a member of the Burns' con- gregation for the past 32 years. Once in the shed, the bell rested there for eight years. It was then trans- ported to storage behind the church where it received conservatory treatment and over the next year, a cairn was con- torical significance to the Burns Church and to Ashburn," Mr. Burgess said. "It is a reminder of the faith of the people who built the church years ago, and to the fact that church still goes on today." The church was origi- nally established in 1849, and is celebrating its 150th For Super TE Great Service : Come see | Diane Richardson or Brian Norrish anniversary this year. "The bell dedication ser- vice is part of our anniver- sary activities," said Mr. Burgess. "We held our ded- - hold its next 'meeting at and ~ Brooklin United Church on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 8pm.
