After a disappointing season last year, management and players are looking to turn things around this CHRIS HALL / PORT PERRY STAR year. The young squad opened up their new season on Friday night in Georgina and were given a good 6-0 thumping, but the team turned things around less than 24 hours later when Dale Drummond, Jeff Clarke, Matt Thurston, and Bill Beaulieu provided all the offense they'd need. Starting all over again The Port Perry Modacks open up the 1999-2000 Junior C hockey season with a 6-0 loss in Georgina, but rebound to defeat the Ice 4-2 before an excited home crowd By John B. McClellend Port Perry Star It was just the first weekend of a new Junior C hockey season, but the Port Perry MoJacks went a long way in exorcising any of the demons that may be hanging around from last year. In a home-and-home with the Georgina Ice, the MoJacks were pounded 6-0 on the road Friday night. But 24 hours later, they bounced right back and showed a lot of grit (not to mention talent) to « double up the same Ice team 4-2 in front of a good crowd at the Scugog Arena. That kind of thing just didn't happen very often, if at all, last season, and could be a very good indication of much better things to come for the green and white in the 1999-2000 campaign. Head coach Tom Thornbury was » hardly surprised that his charges bounced back for the win at home. "We were really in control to be able to bounce back like that. We played well from start to finish," he said after the game. Chalking up the 6-0 loss to some "first game jitters and nerves" on the part of many of his players, he said it was a different story the fol- lowing evening when the team kept right to the game plan in shutting down the Georgina point men who Jikee to pinch at the opposition blue ine. And the coach noted the fine play of netminder Jeff Mackie, who in the 4-2 victory came up with some superb saves, especially in the first half of the game when the outcome was still in doubt. "He made the big stops early to keep us in the game," said coach Thornbury. "He really redeemed himself." Mackie was the difference in this one. On more than one occasion, he showed flashes of the brilliance from a couple of seasons ago when he carried the MoJacks into a play- off position. If the Oshawa native continues to perform like that, opposition snipers are going to be having fits this season. In Saturday's game, the Ice got on the board first early in the open- ing period when Ryan Jensen banked a power play slap shot off the inside of Mackie's pad. But veteran Dale Drummond evened the game a few minutes later on a nifty play as he was sent in alone on a great pass at centre from Adam Jones. Drummond, now in his third sea- son with the MoJacks, displayed his natural goal-scoring talents. In fact, he had a strong game and eas- ily could have popped two or three other goals. Coach Thornbury said Drummond had a fine training camp. "He's here to play this season and he wants to win as much as anybody on the team," he added. It was another veteran who put the ModJacks up for good late in the first period, this one short-handed. Captain Jeff Clarke wound up with the slap shot from the top of the face-off circle and the puck was in the net before Ice goalie Colin O'Neil made a move. Newcomer Matt Thurston gave the MoJacks a 3-1 lead midway through the second. He fooled O'Neil with a quick rising shot that squirt- ed between the post and goalie's shoulder. Clarke and John Werry drew the assists of that goal.
