A ET EEE EEE EEE EET, "A Family Tradition for 133 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 28, 1999 - 3 More than 2,000 homes in plan Scugog joins Uxbridge in Gan Eden fight By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star In a show solidarity for a close neigh- bour, Scugog councillors have agreed to support their counterparts in Uxbridge In opposing a massive residential devel- opment proposed for the Oak Ridge Moraine. The Gan Eden development calls for some 2,100 houses in what is now a largely rural area of south Uxbridge. Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt, who introduced the resolution of support for Uxbridge's stance, said this kind of mas- sive develoment has no place in rural areas. If it is ever approved, it would lead to what he termed "linear urban sprawl along the entire length of the proposed water and sewer services." And eventually, he said, Scugog could be faced with demands for similar large scale developments. As well, Mayor Moffatt noted that Gan Eden is proposed for the environ- mentally sensitive Oak Ridge Moraine. If approved, it would have serious con- sequences for the ecosystem of the moraine, he said. The Durham Region Official Plan places severe restrictions on any kind of development along the moraine for envi- ronmental reasons. The resolution of support was unani- mously endorsed by all members of Scugog council at their meeting Sept. 20. Jackson will speak to Chamber at next meeting The Scugog Chamber of Commerce will hold their Business for Breakfast Meeting on Thursday, Sept. 30 from 7:30 to 8:50 "a.m. at Jester's Court Restaurant, 279 Queen St., Port Perry. Guest speaker will be Dave Jackson, President, Mother Jackson's Open Kitchens. He will discuss the history and develop- ment of a family business that has grown to become one of Scugog Township's major enterprises. Everyone is welcome.
