"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" aaa RI LS uur a Shans Li Local skateboard park group should look to Uxbridge first: Councillor Skateboard enthusiasts in Uxbridge have not proven that they are responsible enough to have 'board park in their town, says one township councillor. A temporary skateboard park was set up at the Uxbridge Arena earlier in the summer to gauge local interest in the project before construction began on a permanent site, said Ward 3 councillor Faith Neumann earlier this week. But, she continued, if the actions over the past sum- mer are any indication of the type of responsibility and behaviour they will exhibit after a permanent site in constructed, then Uxbridge council should reconsider their plans to invest between $40,00 and $50,000 towards the design and construction of a skateboard park for Uxbridge youth, as part of the community's millinneum project. A number of ramps, a fun box and a quarter-pipe were set up at the arena near the end of July, but that's when complaints soon began, said Ms Neumann. "It was a popular location, for good reasons and bad," she said. "Soon there was some vandalism and garbage left laying around and they were staying there until all hours of the night." Hours of operation for the park were supposed to be from 10 a.m. to dusk, but come 2 a.m. there were still some youngsters using the facility. Police were also called to the site on occasion to handle complaints, she added. "At this point I would not recommend that we build a permanent site... we as a municipality need the users of the skateboard park to act in a more responsible manner," said Ms Neumann, who as a youth recreation committee member has valuable input into the future of a 'board park. "The kids have to take care of this themselves, and so far they haven't proven to me or anyone else that they are capable of doing that." The situation in Uxbridge is one for organizers in Port Perry to consider too as a small group here in Scugog continue to raise funds to construct their own skateboard park.
