Durham District School Board Chair Doug Ross said that the board constantly feels the pressure to solve such problems first, in effect breaking ground for other boards. "Nobody has a solution to these (labour) prob- lems," said Mr. Ross. "I resent it sometimes, that the government and other boards seem to look at us to solve these problems first and save them the trouble. If they are looking at us to pull some magic rabbit out of a hat, they will be disappointed this time." Mr. Ross said, however, that he is generally pleased with the EIC report. "I think it speaks well for our board that the EIC feels our administration of things is going well," he said. Report on Durham board favourable "I think it speaks very highly of something that we here already knew: that our administration staff is of the highest calibre." Under challenges faced by the board, the EIC indicated sharing more services with other boards and better communication of the role of trustees will be issues in Durham. In all, 11 areas of board progress -- including the board- wide survey of students for views on the sys- tem -- were listed as local initiatives of which other boards should take note. Mr. Ross said the report reflects the hard work staff and trustees put into running the board. "In my view it is our job' to make sure the stu- dents and the public get value for their money and the services they need," he said. "The report reflects that we are doing that and we will continue to try to better ourselves."
