8 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 2, 1999 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" LETTERS Soccer executive managed well during year of transition To the Editor: I am replying to a letter in The Star on Oct. 26 "Players, parents disap- pointed by local soccer association." I would like to give your readers and Cynthia Hazelton some back- ground information concerning the Scugog Soccer Association. Over the last 10 years the associa- tion has grown from a player registra- tion of 250 to 1,000 in 1999. Ten years ago the association was run by a group of 10 volunteers (four executives and six directors) and today with 1,000 players there are 14 volunteers (four executives and 10 directors) who have to administer the operation of 60 teams playing in five different leagues with teams travel- ling to and from Toronto, Peterborough, Cobourg and many more towns. During the past several years the association knew that they would have to improve and enlarge the soc- cer fields located on Old Simcoe Road, The association worked very closely with the Township of Scugog and at the end of 1998 the Scugog Fields were levelled and enlarged. This improvement made the fields unavailable for the 1999 season. So far in 1999 the association has con- tributed $16,000 to field improvement. This meant that for the 1999 season the association would have to arrange for alternative fields for the 1,000 players to have an opportunity to play. The field committee worked very hard and secured 11 different loca- tions in the township that teams could hold practices and play their games. This committee moved goal posts to these locations and marked the fields as best they could with few volunteers. I must make note of Cynthia Hazelton's remark that the associa- tion cancelled the year end tourna- ment because they thought they could get away with it and all parents including herself did nothing. Many parents get involved and coach their children and help wherev- er possible. Then there are parents who don't get involved other than to criticize. A financial statement is available for anyone to view. The association worked very hard to keep parents notified and newslet- ters were given to coaches who gave them to the players to take home. The last newsletter advised of the annual meeting being held on Sept. 18 at the soccer clubhouse. I attended this meeting which had to be tabled because of lack of attendance. Another annual meeting was sched- uled for Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Good Shepherd School at which a new exec- utive was elected by a total of 14 peo- ple. Of the 14 people in attendance, 12 coach teams in addition to the work that they do for the association. Both of the above meetings were advertised in the local papers but the Oct. 28 meeting was only attended by the dedicated few who really take interest in the soccer association and arrange a summer of soccer in Scugog Township. None of the parents that are sup- posed to be disappointed with the soc- cer association took the time to attend. For the Scugog Soccer Association this is a very busy time of the year. Members will be attending the National Soccer Association Convention in Vaughan Nov. 5 to 7, attending annual general meetings of the different leagues they are involved in and preparing the 2000 budget. David Michel, who was president for 1999, should be commended for the excellent job he did to make sure that soccer ran as smooth as it possi- bly could this past summer. Dave's dedication, week in and week out made sure this happened. When the improved soccer fields on Old Simcoe Road are ready in 2000 we will be the envy of many clubs. We shall have excellent fields and wash- rooms. I have coached or managed a soccer team for the past 14 years and Scugog Soccer Fields are among of the few that have permanent washrooms and even a telephone. Rather than criti- cize and complain, let's pitch in and make the association even better. In closing I would like to say that all of the people involved in the soccer association have full time jobs, fami- lies and still find time to volunteer many hours to the association. Spending many evenings working on budgets, schedules, coaches clinics and referees clinics for your children. Without these faithful few there would not be a soccer association. So let's get involved. Ron Cosway, Port Perry Sar. PENING CONCERT urday, November 6th <99 8 pm. Fro t Sir Sanford 5 Theatre Flemin g Coll 4 on E GINGER GROUP i rio of 3 gi .
