"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 9, 1999 - 11 Local K of C council wins award By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Port Perry's Knights of Columbus chapter has been given an award for its members' contribu- tions to church and com- munity. Tom Gyokery, Grand Knight of the Immaculate Conception K of C council, learned recently that his club had been named winner of the Columbian Award by Supreme Office. It's one of numerous awards the local chapter has accumulated over the years. 'The Columbian Award recognizes the club's excellence in sponsor- ship of programs that serve families, the church and the commu- nity. It was chosen from among the five councils that comprise District 70 in Durham Region. Officials at the Supreme Office recog- nized Immaculate Conception's willingness and ability to undertake and successfully com- plete ambitious projects that include fundraising for a wide variety of causes, said Mr. Gyokery. "For the size of our club, we do a lot of fundraising," he said. The primary effort for the council over the past year and a half has been raising funds for a new church. The Immaculate Conception church on Hwy. 7A was destroyed in a spectacular fire in May of 1998. But many other com- munity organizations benefit from the club's largess, said Mr. Gyokery; they include Operation Scugog, Community Care, the Scouting program, Rose of Durham, and minor hockey. The club also hosts an annual basketball free throw competition for elementary school chil- dren, and contributes funds for Port Perry's annual Canada Day fire- works display. In addition, there are numerous requests for support during any given year, said Mr. Gyokery. "There's always some- one asking for support," he said. "Our budget for the year is $14,000." Their next major effort will be their annu- al 50/50 draw, with tick- ets going for $100. Early in the new year they'll start selling tickets for their big car draw.
