"Through his recent comments, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Tony Clement has decided to disregard the urgent conservation issues on the Moraine," said FON Conservation Director Ron Reid. "Clement's claim that voluntary guidelines are working is contradicted by the facts, Municipalities, conservation groups and Moraine landowners all want tighter controls on development. Clement just doesn't get it." Earlier this month more than 200 delegates at the Clean Water Summit called for a development freeze and new provincial development controls on the Oak Ridges Moraine. Since 1991, when the Moraine was identified as an area of provincial significance, the Regions of York, durham and Peel have approved housing for 98,000 people on the Moraine, and an additional 20 applica- tions are currently under review. The situation is now critical. "The successful resolution of the Lands for Life process in northern and central Ontario, shows that John Snobelen can balance conservation and develop- ment interests. He has the ability to lead divergent parties to a conclusion they all can support," said Mr. Reid. "That's exactly the skill we need for the Moraine, and we need it now." The Ministry of Natural Resources was the lead agency in developing the 1994 Oak Ridges Moraine Strategy for the Greater Toronto Area, which was broadly endorsed as an acceptable land use plan, but never implemented. The Natural Resources Minister currently has responsibility for the Niagara Escarpment, another natural feature of provincial significance like the Oak Ridges Moraine. The Federation of Ontario Naturalists is the province's oldest conservation group, with 15,000 members and 99 member clubs, including 21 clubs on the Moraine and its watersheds. . - . = 1) S = afr SIAN - sn ss Las , 4 x [Be wo y VB he / d [> ' D <5 a, 1] > ' "Your Consigment Store" SE PLUS...
