J. "A Family Tradition for 134 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 30, 1999 - 5 Township hires Deputy CAO Yvonne de Wit has 14 years experience in municipal administration By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Scugog Tewnship has hired a new administrative officer to help the municipality prepare for a future that guarantees nothing but change. Yvonne de Wit, 39, has been named Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for the township. Reporting to CAO Earl Cuddie, Ms de Wit will have a wide range of responsibilities that focus on administration of the munici- pality, and its various depart- ments. The township originally adver- tised for a clerk, in an effort to - divert some of the duties assumed by Mr. Cuddie -- in his dual role as clerk and administrator -- to another position. But the position was revised after Ms de Wit inter- viewed for the job. "I have a very broad skill set," said Ms de Wit, a township resi- dent for a year and a half. "When I was being interviewed they saw that skill set, and saw an opportu- nity to apply it within the town- ship." Ms de Wit, an employee with the City of Scarborough for 14 years prior to moving here from Pickering, said her skills include personnel, health and safety issues, and managerial develop- ment. Such issues as municipal amal- gamation, Scugog's role in the mammoth Greater Toronto Services Board structure, and the costly downloading of services from the province to local govern- ment loom large on the. horizon, said Ms de Wit. "Being a smaller municipality with some humongous players out there, that has to be a real chal- lenge for a smaller municipality like Scugog," she said. As responsibilities are added through downloading and finances tighten, the municipality will also have to address the services it pro- vides, said Ms de Wit. "I think within municipalities we've been struggling with these issues for years now, and I think the taxpayers are aware of that," she said. Ms de Wit lives in the Marsh Hill area with husband Ron Gordon, daughter Laura, 13, and son Bryan, 9. She's spent the past year and a half helping get her family settled after their move here, and just recently began send- ing resumes out to municipal offices in the area. "I wasn't even aware that Scugog had advertised for a town clerk," she said. "The timing just so happened that my resume came in at the same time as they were advertising." Ms de Wit starts working from the clerk's office in Port Perry tomorrow (Dec. 1). Nine impaired charges in first RIDE weekend Durham Regional Police kicked off their 1999 Holiday RIDE pro- gram last weekend and, after only three nights, have already charged nine people with impaired driving. Programs were set up in Oshawa, Whitby, Bowmanville, Ajax and Pickering over the past weekend, with almost 5,200 vehicles checked and 68 roadside breath tests administered. A total of 13 12-hour suspensions were issued, and nine people were charged with exceeding the legal blood-alcohol limit. Other charges laid as a result of the RIDE checks included no license, no insurance, possession of a con- trolled substance, and trafficking a controlled substance. "No matter how much the: fines are and how long the suspension periods are some people still drive drunk," said a police spokesperson in a press release. "The Durham Regional Police RIDE Unit will be out now until the New Year with a zero tolerance towards anyone who has had a drink. If you drink you will be stopped. We will not lose another inno- cent life to a drunk dri- ver." DAVID M.
