Rumours of a region- wide fire department have been heard, and, says Chief Miller, there's always the possibility of a realignment of munici- pal borders somewhere down the road. "We have to look at all our options. There's talk of the region taking over the fire services and tak- ing care of the whole thing. That's something we'll have to keep an eye on," said the chief. "And if there is an amalgamation then we'll look at how, iwhen and with whom, 'and then we'll have to: live with it." "It has been men- tioned to council in the past," said Chief Miller, noting that he'd at least like to see a full- time day staff. "We feel a full-time service is needed here, for the good of the com- munity, but unfortunate- ly it may take a major fire or a number of lives to be lost to get this," he said. "I think council gets a good bang for their buck with this department, and that they have got a really good group of guys here willing to do this for their community. Whatever happens in the future we'll have to deal with, but I hope a full- time day staff comes with it." To help bolster a dwindling crew of fire- fighters at the Caesarea's station, the department has hired six new men. They are currently undergoing training, and should be ready for duty by the new year. Eight candidates were selected, but two pulled out for personal reasons. No women applied for the positions. "I have no problem with hiring women; we'll hire anybody who can do the job," said the chief. The Scugog Fire Department will proba- bly run another recruit- ment drive next fall, said Chief Miller.
