And, the local member of provincial parliament doesn't blame them. "I'm disappointed as well," he said, a few hours before seven PPHS students showed up at his office, returning more than 1,200 copies of the book compiled by the Ministry of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation. The books, which were handed out to each stu- dent in the province, include works from ele- mentary and secondary school students who were asked to share their vision of Ontario in the year 2020. Approximately 2 mil- lion copies were printed, at a cost of more than $2 million. "I had no idea what it was until I actually read the book, and the feed- back has been horrible. I'm very disappointed," said Mr. O'Toole. "We spoiled a wonder- ful opportunity to chroni- cle these students' lives and to mark the millenni- um. This is not about my life, or (Premier) Mike Harris' life, it is about the kids and that's tragic." Students across Ontario, particularly those in senior grades, have protested the distri- bution of the books. The majority say the money could have been better used for needed items such as text books or, at the very least, repairs and improve- ments to area parks and the planting of trees. In the view of Chris Skinner, a 17-year-old PPHS student, the gov- ernment's actions are inexcusable. "It was a big waste of money, really. It didn't represent Ontario the way they felt it would, of the way we would want it," he said last week. A WE 229. Added Rebecca Cohn, an 18-year-old OAC stu- dent at PPHS: "As our elected representative, it is John O'Toole's job to represent us and our tax money, and he didn't do it. He disappointed us all."
