Blackstock At this Christmas season, may I take this opportunity to wish the editor, and staff of this newspaper a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Also season's greetings to the countless loyal readers and contributors to this col- umn. Have you joined the Millennium celebration yet? Any adult wishing to carry a real Olympic style torch by any motorized vehicle around a part of the township between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on December 31st or any student wishing to walk with the torch between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. from Mike Baker's to light the giant bon- fire at the fairgrounds should contact Andrea Weir at 986- 0600 or Aileen VanCamp at 986-4948 as soon as possible. Four students from the names submitted will actually carry the torch this final mile. The children's event which is pri- marily skating, begins with the bonfire at 7 p.m. and con- cludes with fireworks at 10 p.m. If you are interested in vol- unteering to help decorate or assist with the children's event, please call Fred Ford 986-0352 or Joan Graham 985-6446. Sorry this was missed from last week's column--On Saturday, Richard and Ruby VanCamp hosted their annual family Christmas gathering with the following members of their family present--Louise and Jeff Carroll, Anna and Sophie of London; Lois and Glenn McLeod, Cheryl, Shaun and Beverly of Camburne; Lawrence and Jan VanCamp, Blackstock; Brian and Maggie VanCamp, Nathan and .. Matthew of Winnipeg, and Doreen VanCamp of Blackstock. On Sunday after church, this group gathered again to celebrate Matthew's baptism. The community was sad- dened to hear of the sudden death of longtime resident Dorothy Lee. Dqrothy was a lifetime member of the Blagkstock Agricultural Society and a tireless worker for the Court Lady Snowbirds and Nestleton Presbyterian Church. Sympathy is extended to her family and friends. Sympathy is also extended to Pat and George Obstfeld and family on the recent death of Pat's niece, Michelle Lucyk who was killed in a car accident enroute to Florida. Nancy Bryans of Cadmus enjoyed the month of November in their Clearwater home. Bob also visited for sev- eral days holiday. Debbie Bryans, Leanna and Christina of South Janetville visited with Debbie's sister Lisa Black, Tony Sorokowski and new baby Christopher at their home outside Winnipeg. Proud grandparents are for- mer residents Bev and Shirley Black of Oshawa. Debbie Bryans has a big smile these days after winning $5,000.00 from a scratch ticket. Due to poor weather there were only five tables of card players at the weekly card party. Winners were Harry Hill, Doris Hill, Wilma VanCamp, Eileen Owens and Stuart Dorrell. Lucky draws were won by Richard Potter, Helen Dorrell and Harry Hill. A large crowd enjoyed the Advent 4 Service at Blackstock United Church. The Sunday School presented "Christ the Lord is Born" and "When the Lord came to our Land". The highlight of the service was the Senior Choir's Christmas cantata, "Rejoice Believers!" St. John's Anglican Church News by Colin Beal All at St. John's were sad- dened to learn of the sudden passing of Dorothy Lee. Prayer were offered, during the Sunday Service, for Dcrothy and the members of her family. At coffee time, following the service, Don Proutt was sere- naded on the occasion of his birthday. It's just a few days to Christmas which, at St. John's will start on Christmas Eve with carols and refreshments in the Parish Hall at 7:00 p.m. This will be followed in the Church by the choral celebra- tion of the Christmas Eucharist using the traditional Liturgy of The Nativity. There will be no service on Christmas Day. On Boxing Day (Dec. 26) at 9:30 a.m. the Christmas Celebrations will continue with the service of carols and lessons. Bill and Shirley Barr are up from their winter home in Florida to spend the Christmas season with their family. All are welcome to attend worship at the Seagrave United Church at 7:30 p.m. The candlelight service will fea- ture a cantata service "Walk in the Light" with visual and digital effects and the lighting of the Christ candles. Greenbank and Pinedale choirs will join the Seagrave choir for the music. Scugog churches are planning an ccumenical Celebration service on Sun., Jan. 2, 2000 at 7:00 p.m. at Scugog Community Centre, Port Perry. This will be a service of lively music, favorite hymns, readings and reflec- tions on faith, love and hope. The offer- ings will be used to help fund a new permanent hospital chaplin for Port Perry and Uxbridge Lakeridge Health children's time Rev. Carson talked to them about their activities and programs leading to Christmas Day. The choir sang "Christmas Peace Cannan". The gospel reading from Luke 1 vs 26-38 was read by Marjorie Chambers. Rev. Carson's sermon was "The Most Convincing Angel", based on the gospel reading. Donna Wannamaker gave the minute for mission on how a group of co-workers help Jamaicans. The church service next Sun., (Dec. 26th) will be a shorter service of Christmas cards, singing and story telling. All are welcome. Due to all the recent tragic loss of lives from house fires perhaps a reminder to all to check that their smoke detectors are functioning prop- erly is in order. Congratulations on all the wonderful perfor- mances! Scugog Island United Church A Christmas service of Communion was held on Sunday morning. The orchestra and choir pre- sented special ministry of music. Tom & Melissa Rennick participated in the lighting of the Advent Wreath. Our annual Christmas Eve service will be held on Fri., Dec. 24th at 7:30 p.m. at SI1.U.C. Everyone 1s welcome. There will be a joint service on Sun., Dec. 26th at Manchester U.C. at 11 a.m. A regular worship ser- vice will be held on Sun. Jan. 2nd at S.I1.U.C. at 9:45 a.m. Elaine's last Sunday will be Sun., Jan. 9th. A joint service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at S.I1.U.C.
