Officers were operating a spot check at the intersection of Hwy. 7A and the Island Rd., stopping vehi- cles to check for impaired drivers. Police say a Port Perry man was stopping for the RIDE unit just before 2:30 a.m. when his car was struck-from behind by a 1998 Ford pick-up being driven east by a 24- 'year-old Blackstock man. Durham Police say the truck slid through the checkpoint at approxi- mately 100 km/h and struck the Port Perry man's 1985 Mazda 626, . which was forced into the south "ditch. The Blackstock man was arrest- ed and charged with one count of exceeding the legal blood-alcohol limit, and one count of Impaired dri- ving, police said. The Port Perry man w was S not seri- ously injured, but his car was destroyed in the accident, say police. At. another RIDE check on the weekend, a Kirkfield man was charged with dangerous driving after he accelerated towards an offi- cer. Police said a 48-year-old Kirkfield man was stopped at the check point, at Simcoe St., just south of Hwy. 7A in Port Perry, and asked to pull into the safety lane for further questioning. The man accelerated his vehicle, causing the tires to spin, police said. He entered the safety zone weaving around pylons and a RIDE van, and came to a stop after causing an offi- cer to leap out of the way.
