"A Family Tradition for 134 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 21, 1999 - 3 Lakeridge Health given average rating by panel By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Lakeridge Health Corporation has been given a passing grade in an independent report on the province's health care system. A study conducted by the University of Toronto and the Ontario Hospital Association has shown that the Lakeridge Health Corporation -- which is comprised of hospitals in Port Perry, Uxbridge, Bowmanville, = Whitby, and Oshawa -- is operat- ing at a level that's on par with other hospitals in the province. Lakeridge Health even scored an above average mark for its hysterectomy procedure, which boasts one of the lowest length-of-stay periods in the province. The corporation was also assessed as above average for its treat- ment of prostate condi- tions. According to the study, Lakeridge Health has the lowest number of readmissions for the operation in Ontario. In fact, the local health system scored an "average" mark for each of the 38 indicators included in the Hospital '99 report, except for the two rated above average. The corporation did not receive any below aver- age marks. "We are extremely pleased with the results of this report," Lakeridge Health CEO Brian Lemon said dur- ing last week's release of the report. "This should give the people of Durham some reassurance that com- pared with other hospi- tals across the province, they are getting some of the best care possible when they visit one of our hospital sites. It's a good measure of reassur- ance," he said. "We've always felt that we are competent and effective, but we're delighted to hear it in the report."
