Te a. a "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 4, 2000 - § & ig" 4 + k we fies "SCUGOG WELCOMES THE NEW MILLENNIUM 'and members Crowds gather to ring in the new year with flair at party in Blackstock By Rik Davie Special to the Star The torch carried through the streets of Blackstock on New Years Eve was just the begin- ning of a night-long'cele- bration that brought the young and the old together for one of the largest - and longest - parties in the communi- ty"s long history. Children from the vil- lage took turns carrying the torch through the streets, to a huge bonfire pile at the fairgrounds. Once there, Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt and Ward 4 Councillor Dave Dietlein looked on and the crowd roared as the fire was lit. Hundreds jammed the arena and fair- grounds to enjoy a family skate, hay rides and other family activities. A huge Scugog Township Millennium cake was cut, of the community celebrated together as the new year neared. The alcohol-free func- tion was a preamble party to the one for the grown-ups that began at 9 p.m., and was a chance for the young and young- at-heart to mix and min- gle as the century wound down. Fred Ford, one of the main movers behind the family event, was jubilant as he watched the flames of the millennium bon- fire shoot into the sky. "This is just wonder- ful," he said. "What a crowd." ES Inside, the skaters moved to the music com- ing from CD's and took pictures on digital cam- eras. And outside, two horses hauled families around on a farm wagon, just as they did at the turn of the last century. The meeting of technolo- gies reminded one that some things do not, and maybe need not change. For the good folks of Blackstock will come the warm memory that as the dawn of a new Millennium came, they saw it in with family and friends.
