Since the last weekend of November, members of Durham's Traffic Management Unit have set up random check points across the region in each municipality as part of the program. During that time, police stopped 36,500 vehicles and administered 823 roadside breath tests. They issued 171 twelve-hour suspensions for those who blew a warning, and arrested a total of 73 motorists who exceeded the legal blood-alcohol level of 0.08. During the 1999/2000 initiative, officers targeted the region's back roads where traffic is lighter, but where the majority of the region's fatal collisions involving alcohol have occurred. On a positive note, the Durham Traffic Management Unit has not investigated a fatal acci- dent this holiday season that involved booze. This is the sixth consecutive year in Durham that there have been no fatal collisions involving impaired drivers during the holidays. However, police did notice an increase in the number of people arrested and charged for posses- sion of narcotics and stolen vehicles. In their 1998/1999 campaign, Durham Police stopped a total of 41,675 vehicles, administered 635 breath tests, issued 168 twelve-hour suspen- sions, and charged 79 people with exceeding the legal limit. c STEPS TORID THE WINTER BLAHS: Reflexology Certification Courses Cruise Specialists.
