-_ "> rr -------- b-- 22 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 22, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Scout-Guide Week By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Youngsters across Canada will gather in celebration this week as organizations throughout the country honour their annu- al Scout-Guide Week. In" recognition of Lord Baden Powell's birthday, the founder of the Scouting movement, and that of his wife's, Lady Baden Powell, organizations will host a number of events to pay tribute to the founder and his wife. To mark the special occasion, a number of Scout and Guide movements in the Pine Ridge Districts -- including those here in Scugog as well as in Uxbridge, Zephyr, Beaverton, Cannington, and Sunderland -- held Church Parades last weekend at various churches in their area. The groups paraded into the churches wearing full uniforms, where they stood on display while their leaders gave a short discussion on their activities and their cel- ebration. Other activities scheduled for Scout- Guide Week include Thinking Day cele- brations, 'which will be held tonight at a number of centres across the Pine Ridge District. The local organizations here in Port Perry and across Scugog had a busy 1999 and are planning to keep the activities up this as well. Here is a run-down of what some of the local movements have on their schedule: - Those involved with the Ist Port Perry organization have had quite an exciting past few months, and it will only get busier with the arrival of spring and sum- mer, says group committee chair Ellen Greenough. After holding their Church Parade at the Presbyterian Church in Port Perry last weekend, other plans include having Venturers attend their annual District Winter Camp at Pefferlaw's Eagle Wood Camp on Feb. 25 while local Cubs will design and construct their own Kub Kars, which will be put to the ultimate test dur- Pine Ridge District set to celebrate ing the first week of April and the final races will be held on April 9 at the Port Perry Legion to declare a winner. Scout Trucks will also be built and raced at Zephyr on March 25. Later this year, Ist Port Perry will host the 30th annual District Cuboree at the local fairgrounds between june 2-4. More than 250 youngsters and adults are expected to attend. The group will also plant Scout trees at White Feather Farms in Raglan on May 6 and area Beavers will attend a Beaveree in Uxbridge later in the year as well. The Scouts' have also planned a trip to explore Tobermory's caves in May, a canoe trip in June, and will be attending a special Millennium Camp in September. Members of Ist Port Perry's Venturers movement are, also planning a trip fos.the last week of August this year which will take them to England and they will be making their own canoes this year. The group's annual banquet and awards ceremony will be held in May. As for the past year, the Ist Port Perry unit kept themselves busy with the Cubs camping in the barracks at Fort York last October; the Cubs and Scouts took a bike hike in October; held an apple day to say thank you to the community for all their help; sold Christmas trees at Reid's Independent Grocers; participated in the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Port Perry Legion last November; and held special Halloween and Christmas parties. - The 1st Scugog movement has also been busy, notes group committee chair Dave Leggett. As well as holding their own Church Parade last weekend at the Manchester United Church, the local group will be attending a number of other events planned for this year by the Pine Ridge District unit. - The 2nd Scugog unit, under the direc- tion of Kim King, will be holding their annual Camp For Cubs this weekend at the Scugog Islan Hall. The district is marking Scout-Guide Week. participate in a variety of activities, including working on their Kub Kars. A trail ceremony will also be held for the Beavers in Uxbridge on May 13, to mark their movement up to the ranks of Cub. Presenting the awards to the boys was Pontypool Fire Chief John Toombs. - Members of Ist Cartwright held their Church Parade at Blackstock United Church on Feb. 20 and also held .a Ice Fishing Derby for all Beavers, Cubs and Scouts on Lake Scugog in January, said Janet Van Camp, the group's committee chair. - Members of the Ist Seagrave unit tied in some ice-fishing with their Church Parade last weekend as they spent Saturday fishing before spending the night at the Seagrave United Church and then held their procession the following morning. Each of the local groups will participate in all the local evénts, as well as the lager activities including the jamborees, Cuborees, and Beaverees, says District President Howard Hall. "Their is a lot happening here in Pine Ridge District; both the kids and adults had a lot of fun last year, and there's a lot more planned for this year as well," he said, noting that Tom Adams is the new District Commissioner. "We'd love to recruit more leaders, if anyone's interested, and we're always open to more children. We're quite active and we do a lot of things; we don't just want active kids, but energetic adults too who can help everyone have fun."
