UE tnt CAIN CRT rt a Is Si ii 12 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 14, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Township to form plan for casino cash By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Scugog council should have a plan in place by mid-summer for the municipality's share of the proceeds from casino slot machines, says Mayor Doug Moffatt. According to an agreement struck recently with the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations and the Ontario Casino Corporation, the town- ship stands to receive a cut of the slot machine revenues at the Great Blue Heron Charitable Casino. After payouts, 5 per cent of the net revenue will be passed along to the local native band, which in turn will write Scugog Township a cheque for 1.5 per cent of that amount. An addi- tional half-per cent of that 5 per cent cut will go to Durham Region. The slot machines are expected to be open to the public next month. Casino management shut down the bingo hall last August, and began renovations for the installation of slot machines at that time. "We don't know what the figures will be and when we'll even begin to see the money. We could be looking at $10,000, $50,000 or half- a-million dollars... we don't know, and we haven't (allocated) any- thing in the (2000) bud- get noting those rev- . enues," said the mayor. He hopes to have a pol- icy statement on the issue put together on the matter by June. "We want to have a municipal form that will see any money from the casino -- for the first three months of each year -- put into a special fund where it will stay and nobody will touch it. Once it gets to a size- able amount -- SI mil- lion? -- then maybe we'll use the interest to help offset some costs," he said. "This year is an experimental year; we'll see what we get and use it as it comes in." Mayor Moffatt was quick to point out that the township isn't receiving money for nothing in its arrange- ment with the casino. "This doesn't come without a cost," he warned. "It's not all gravy; at some point we have to worry about infrastructure costs." Those costs could include maintenance of the Island Rd., the route gamblers must take to get to the casino, he said. Call for report raises speculation Board may face motion to teach creation By Rik Davie Special to the Star The Durham District School Board may be faced with a call to teach the Biblical version of the earth's creation at its March 20 meeting. Rumblings have begun after a staff report on the teaching of the theory of evolution in Durham schools was requested by Ajax trustee Brain Clarke, and presented at the March 6 meeting without discussion. Oshawa trustee Kathleen Hopper told press after the meeting that the report had been *Dr. J. Cottrell «Dr. J. Hardy Dr. L. Gideon * Dr. C. Banfield «Dr. L. Poranganel «Dr. H. Dewar + Dr. T. Mr. Clarke was unavailable to com- ment on his request. And Oshawa Trustee Jane Wiest said at the time, "I don't want to steal Brian's thunder on this, it is his idea he should discuss it." But board Chair Doug Ross thinks Mr. Clarke is preparing to put forward a motion regarding the teaching of creationism. "I believe you will see a motion brought forward requesting that we send a letter to the province ask- ing them to recognize cre- ationism and include it in the curriculum of provin- cial schools," said Mr Ross. Mr. Ross said that he expects Mr. Clarke will Directory of Coming Events Blackstock Women's Institute Aerobics Gentle - Mondays - 1 p.m. - Blackstock United Church; Tuesdays - Low Impact - 7:30 - p.m. - Blackstock United Church; Thursdays - Low Impact - 7:30 p.m. Nestleton Hall. Scugog trustee Bobbie 'Drew, who is also vice- chair of the board, con- firmed that she is prepar- ing for discussion of the issue. "I am preparing myself to discuss the issue," Mrs. Drew said. "I have not been given official notice that it will be brought for- ward, and | am not aware that all trustees have been told of the issue at this time however." The debate on the teaching of the Biblical tenet of creationism ver- sus Darwin's widely accepted theory of evolu- tion has been ongoing since the early part of this century. Currently, accord- ing to the board's report, evolution is taught in depth only in the higher grades beginning with Grade 11.
