Protective netting is also in place at both ends of the rink to protect spec- tators from flying pucks, she added. "We are within the requirements," said Ms Stewart recently. "We've never had a problem here; there hasn't been a serious injury in the six years I've been here anyway. "The Township has taken the appropriate steps to protect fans at the rink from flying objects, such as sticks and pucks. We definitely meet them - there's no doubt that we exceed them." A recent investigation by CBC Radio discovered that an average of 81 per cent of arenas across the country do not meet the CHA safety requirements. A total of 200 rinks were randomly checked, with the majority failing. The CBC investigation into rink safety came just weeks after a 21-year-old Manitoba man suffered fatal injuries after being hit by a puck while taking in a hockey game. The CHA safety regula- tions are not mandated by law. "It's a good idea from a safety point of view," said Mrs. Stewart. "We make safety a high priority here; we're always looking at what can be done to make the arena safer for every- one who uses it and enjoys it."
