"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 9, 2000 - § By Rik Davie Special to the Star A "cold case" investigation that police sources say was on the verge of conclu- sion has been shut down and the two homicide detectives in charge are back in uniform 'while an investigation into alleged professional misconduct is probed by the Durham Regional Police Service professional standards unit. Senior Detectives Greg Heasman and Tom Whiteway have been transferred to uniform duties while the force's profes- as "a really old one." Terry Ryan, president of the Durham Regional Police Association, told The Star he was "shocked and surprised at the allegations," and "taken aback" by the transfers. "I'm not sure what to tell you," Mr. Ryan said late last week. "This really came out of the blue." Spokespersons for the Durham Regional Police declined to comment on the matter, referring it to senior brass. Sources within the force did say that a Deputy Chief of Operations Jim Adams confirmed that a Cobourg Crown Attorney asked to look into the matter found no cause to warrant an investiga- tion by his office. "However," said Deputy Chief Adams, "as a matter of course this has to be prcbed by our professional standards branch as a matter of procedure." Deputy Chief Adams also confirmed reports that the transfer of the two homi- cide veterans to patrol duties was carried out at their own request.
