19 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 30, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Brooklin takes the early lead and hangs on Redmen open 2000 season with an | 1-8 victory over St. Catharines A's The Brooklin Redmen kicked off their 2000 home season with a win over the vis- iting St. Catharines Major Athletics by a score of | 1-8. The team was to have opened their campaign a week ago, however, the withdrawal of the Oshweken Wolves from play this summer meant the opening was cancelled. The Redmen came prepared to play and it seemed the extra week made them even hungrier. Ken Millin opened the scoring for the home team with only 27 seconds gone in the first period. The Redmen were up 3-0 on goals from Eric Perroni and Jason Crosbie before the Major Athletics put one behind Rob Blasdell. The teams traded goals in the rest of the frame and the Redmen took a 5-4 lead into the first intermission. The second period belonged to the Redmen as they outscored the visitors by a score of 4-1. Jason Crosbie and Gary Rosyski were the high scorers in the sec- ond, Crosbie got his second goal at 5:42 and his third for a hat trick at 9:50, Rosyski scored his second and third goals seven Seconds apart with three minutes left in the second. The Redmen took a 9-5 lead into the second intermission. With two minutes gone in the final frame tempers boiled over and Gary Rosyski and Peter Lough, for the Redmen, were assessed five minute fighting majors and game misconducts. For the Major Athletics, Mike Perna and Sean Holmes were given the same penalties as referees, Spies and McGrath, were not going to let the game get out of control. The Major Athletics outscored the Redmen 3-2 in the third but it was not enough as the Redmen won by a final of 11-8 to make their record 1-0 while dropping the Major Athletics to 1-1. On Wednesday, May 31 the Redmen host the Brampton Excelsiors for an 8:30 p.m. game at Iroquois Park. The Redmen came out in style on this night, they scored the first three goals of the contest before the five minute mark of the first period. By the end of the first period the Redmen took a 4-2 lead into the dressing room. The Major Athletics outscored the visi- tors 5-2 in the second period and went into the intermission up by a score of 7-6. . The third period was divided in half with each team scoring three unanswered goals.
