It has been a particularly devastating summer on the roads in this area, with seven deaths in a space of eight days. That's a terrible toll. Adding to the depth of the tragedies have been the deaths of two children, and an 18- ~ year-old man. It is a disturbing fact that we come to expect some number of fatalities on our roads edch summer. The weekends are abuzz with holiday traffic, folks speeding north from the city in search of relaxation and recreation - but curiously hell-bent to get here. And young drivers are out, roaming the roads late into the night, enjoying the season and its social opportunities. And, of course, added to the mix there are those who continue to drink and drive. Two of the accidents in this area have been blamed on drunk drivers. The death toll in those crashes is four. What's to be done? We can blame these and other incidents on a lack of police presence, but that's the easy way out. Sure, cruisers every couple of kilometres along the highway would slow drivers down and make most of them behave properly, but as we know, that's not going to happen. It comes down to the responsibility of each driver out there to look out for himself, and others. There is no excuse for aggressive driving, and, God help us, for drunk driving. Yet it will continue to occur. One hopes the courts will begin to respond to offenders, especially when their actions have resulted in death and heartache. In the meantime, be careful out there. To the Editor: Is everyone in Durham brain dead? You drive the speed limit, people will pass you, either on the straight road, or on a curve. A solid line means no passing. Period. The same for double solid lines. The speed limit that is posted must be adhered to. No passing on curves, at any time. When the light turns amber, you don't race to get through. Always drive with your head- lights on, so you can be seen much more easily. With the number of fatalities we have seen in the past few weeks, plus all the injuries and all the property damage done, we have to do something to stop the carnage on our roads. The best thing would be a better police presence on the road, with no tolerance whatso- ever for offenders; you do one minor infraction, you pay. Regardless. This stupidity has to stop. Leave a little bit earlier for work, or a date with your doctor, or whatever. Every day we hear the phrase Drive safely, arrive alive. Let's do it.
