This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, a aitical phase of the Second World War which created the conditions for Great Britain's survival and the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany. After the fall of France in 1940, Britain with its Dominions, induding Canada, stood alone against Hitlers invading armies. But before Hitler could carry out his planned invasion of Britain, termed Operation Sea Lion, he would have to knock the Royal Air Force (RAF) from the skies. Between july and September 1940, the German air force ~ the Luftwaffe ~ direct- ed a series of bombing raids against England. This period became known as the Batt of Britain. Initially, attacks were directed at British shipping, but on August 12, 1940, the Luftwaffe began attacking over land, bombing radar stations and airfields, and engaging British fighters in an attempt to gain air supremacy. Many Canadians served in the air squadrons which repulsed the Luftwaffe in the summer of 1940. The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) received its baptism of fire when No. | Fighter Squadron RCAF became the first Canadian air force unit to engage enemy planes in battle on August 26, 1940. The squadron met a formation of German bombers over Southern England, downing three enemy planes and damag- ing another four, losing one pilot and one plane. By mid- Odober, No | Squadron had destroyed 3 enemy aircraft and damaged 43 more. It had lost 16 Hurricane planes and three Canadian Pilots had been killed. On August 30, nine planes form No. 242 (Canadian) Squadron of the RAF met one hundred enemy aircraft over Essex. Attacking from above, the squadron claimed 12 downed enemy planes and managed to escape unscathed. The RCAF also shared in repulsing the Luftwaffe's last major daylight attack on Sept. 27, 1940 when it attacked the first wave of enemy planes with an RAF Squadron. With his invasion plans in ruin, Hitler began what is known as the Blitz, an aerial bombardment of London, and other major dties, that was then without precedent. However, this only strengthened the determination of the British people and by the spring of 1941, the attacks had subsided. Despite . these victories, it would be another four years of intense fight- ing before world peace was restored.
