10 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 31, 2000 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" Immediate future of Unity Place skateboard park unknown From Page | Now, however, the immediate future of the Unity Place park is in doubt. "I'd still 'definitely like to see it happen this summer; the kids have been waiting three years for this," said Mr. Todd. "The kids were very disappointed to say the least when | told them. They felt like they had been led astray. They had the funds in place and they were given assur- ances that it could be built for that price," said the parks and rec direc- tor. "lI don't know if the companies are busy or if they were highballing us, but those prices are out of our range." Mr. Todd said there are three options to con- sider: negotiating costs with one of the contrac- PORT PERRY = AR tors; looking at modify- ing, and downsizing, the existing plans; and tumn- ing to local sculptor Bill Lishman for creative ideas on the project. The skateboard park hasn't been the only township project that's encountering complica- tions this summer: Construction on an out- door pool to replace the former Birdseye pool in Port Perry is scheduled to begin on Aug. 8. But township officials were recently informed that the cost of that project has shot up by more than $40,000 than anticipated. Councillors committed $320,000 to the pool in their 2001 budget. They were shocked when Betz Pools of Stouffville for- warded them a bill totalling $361,000. "The prices for the pool came in higher than - expected, but I've been burning the midnight oil with Betz and he's come a long way down," said Mr. Todd. The township has agreed to cover the extra $40,000 through the Community Enhancement Fund, an account made up of the municipality's share of the local casino's slot machine revenues. Some of the work will be tendered out to local contractors to cut costs, Mr. Todd said. "We want all the design features to be kept in," he said. "The ramp, the deck and the splash area are all impor- tant; | think they will all add to the pool, which will hopefully become a destination spot for local residents and visitors." He said slot machine revenues "will provide a nice cushion for us." Work on the pool is expected to begin next week, and is scheduled to be completed at the end of September. A grand opening is expected in May 2002. OFAH"s Project Purple Week runs from Aug. 1-7 The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters is seeking assistance in con- trolling purple loosestrife, an aggressive invader that is choking the life out of our wetlands. The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (O.FA.H.) is, again, orga- nizing Project Purple Week Aug. 1-7, during which community groups and individuals can do their part against this persistent and prolific pest. This is a week to encourage volun- teer community involve- ment and promote public awareness of the ecologi- cal problems associated with purple loosestrife.
