"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 31, 2001 - 13° He's given until Oct. 31 to repair balconies Landlord agrees to make repairs to Water St. By Chris Hall Port Perry Star A Port Perry landlord has agreed to make repairs to his Water St. building, which was declared unsafe last month. Peter Quan, who owns the commercial-residen- tial plaza located at the comer of the Water and Scugog St. intersection, appeared before the township's property stan- dards committee on Tuesday (July 24) after- noon. He had appealed a work order which was presented to him by: Scugog Township in June. After a complaint was filed at the township offices by one of the 35 tenants at the building, bylaw enforcement offi- cer Mark Stephenson vis- ited the site. He said he found large holes in some of the con- crete balconies, and determined there was a potential for some of them to fall onto the sidewalk below. Most of the balconies hang over store entrances. An order from the township meant Mr. Quan had until July 20 to reme- dy the situation. But the landlord appealed the order. On Tuesday, the prop- erty standards committee visited the building before holding a hearing at the township offices. "We dealt with the bal- conies and other proper- - ty standards issues in the work order, and came up with a recommendation to have the work com- pleted by the 3lIst of October," said Mr. Stephenson. As part of the agree- ment reached last week, the landlord agreed to reduce the size of the current balconies. Currently, most of the balconies are about 20 feet in length; Mr. Quan - ET 2 3 : 3 re] h has agreed "to replace them, but scale them back to about seven feet in length, said Mr Stephenson. He has also agreed to renovate the face of both fronting sides of the building during that time; site plan approval will still be required from council. "He's going to cut' down on the size of the " . Lh, 3 a a CR balconies and improve the facing on the fronting sides," said Mr. Stephenson. "It's going to look a little more like the other buildings on the street, very similar in fact, which is the way council has wanted to steer things."
