Scugog Arena will be the host venue on Sept. 8 when the Oshawa Generals, led by Port Perry's own George Burnett, and the Peterborough Petes meet in an OHL exhibition match. While the Port Perry MoJacks will kick off their 30th Junior C season in late September, local hockey fans won't have to wait too long to see action-packed hockey return to their home rink. "We're proud to host Major Junior A hockey and General George and his Oshawa Generals and the Peterborough Petes," said Mo)acks general manager Murray Parliament. A small press conference was held in the community room at Reid's Independent Grocers last Friday evening. "This is probably one of th biggest rivalries in Junior A hockey and the MoJacks are going to give the fans of Port Perry a good show," said Mr. Parliament. "It'll be the final (exhibition) game for the Generals, so it'll be the last chance for some players to make the club so we should see some fine mid-season hockey being played." Scugog Arena last hosted an OHL game a few years ago when the Generals met up with the Guelph Storm. A former coach of the Port Perry MoJacks (1986-87 seasons), George still remains close to his home town, said the Mojacks' GM. "George has a great interest in the MoJacks and the community of Port Perry and he set up this oppor- tunity with the Petes for us. It's a good chance for both clubs to mar- ket their teams," said Mr Parliament. "We're bring Major Junior A hock- ey to Port Perry at Junior C prices, and that's important to fans. This is the best Junior hockey in Ontario -- maybe even Canada -- and they're going to get to see it." The exhibition match will be the second-last tune-up for the Generals before they open the OHL season and Mr. Burnett noted that he expects most of his lineup to be on hand for the contest. "We should pretty much have the team set and everyone who's avail- able should be on the ice," said Mr. Burnett. "I still consider this my home; | live in Oshawa because | work there, but I still have a connection to Port Perry and Murray and the team. Murray gave me my first chance to be a coach and I'll always be thank- ful." George Burnett went on to coach with the Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim Mighty Ducks of the National Hockey League before signing a deal with the Oshawa Turn to Page 19 bf ¥ Finesse | Fishing By Chris Hockley 4 The love of fishing There are a number of great reasons why people fish. One of my favourites is a quote that | heard years ago: "The charm of fishing is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope". I really wish that | knew who to give credit to for this. | have to admit now that | am a gadget guru as well. Fishing seems to be a great place to ease my tinkering cravings. There are electronics galore on just about every boat on any lake at any given time, not to mention all of the gimmicky tackle items. It's great. What's rewarding though is when in the pursuit of the new and unusual, you find a product that works. Really works! While fishing a Stratos/Javelin World Championship Qualifier in the U.S. last year, | was introduced to a product line called Spike-It. Ever since | have been "spiking" everything. Spike-It not only offers an entire innovative line of super effective bait colouring and scent prod- ucts they have just introduced a new soft plastics line as well. The Spike-It Bait Company was founded in 1993 as a manufacturer of fishing dyes for soft plastics, crankbaits and spinnerbait blades. The products are unique from the rest because they add fish attractants to their dyes. Fish Attractants - This is where Spike-It truly shines. They offer seven different tournament strength scents, including the ever-popular garlic and anise. There's also Slime-It. This is a thick scent and colour enhanced spray- on product that fish have simply never seen before. 1 liked that idea. So do the fish! Finally, they also have Fritt's Sticks that will colour and add scent to soft plastics and hard baits alike. These come in a variety of popular colours and scents and are super easy to apply, avoiding sticky, smelly hands. Lure Dyes - These are the products that originally caught my attention and made me a believer. Berlin Reservoir in Ohio is the muddiest water | have ever fished in; clarity was literally limit- ed to about three inches. Spike-It was as essential as the hooks on the bait. It ends up that the products work excel- lent on any colour bait (yes, even the dark coloured baits) fished in any colour water. You simply adapt your baits to what the fish want. The dyes come in bottle and spray form making them a breeze to use. For spinner blades and darker plas- tics Spike-It offers two paint products as well. You simply will not be disap- pointed in any of these products. You have my word. Soft Plastics - New to the Spike-It family is their soft plastic baits. These are top of the line, scent enhanced plastics in a variety of fish catching colours and styles. Fish the eight-inch Ribbler worm around even the thickest cover for the big bass of your lifetime. | have caught more big fish on Spike-It's finesse worm this year than just about any other bait. The Spikeworm is a larger version that can be fished as a worm or soft-jerk bait alike. Spike-It also offers two sizes of lizards. My suggestion would be to try the red shad colour. | have never seen anything quite like it. Finally there is the Craw Chunk. "The new Spike-It Craw Chunk is set- ting the tournament trail on fire. Its unique design has taken soft plastic jig trailers to a new level," proclaims one of Spike-It's promotional brochures. "The detail of this bait sets it apart from the any of the other trailers. The three dimensional claws combined with the truly soft plastic gives this bait one of the best actions on the market today." Check out Spike-It online on my site www.blitzcreek.com or go directly to www.spike-itbaits.com or simply call (706) 562-0009 with your credit card to place an order you won't be disap- pointed with. Boat safely and good fishing.
