"Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 28, 2001 - § Port Perry club sends four crates to Havana Rotary Club effort ships school supplies to Cuba By Chris Hall Port Perry Star It is hoped that stu- dents in Cuban schools will be the beneficiaries of the latest Port Perry Rotary Club effort. Members with the local club here in Port Perry, along with some assistance from local businesses and others, have now wrapped up an effort which saw four large crates of school sup- plies shipped off to Havana last Thursday morning. "It's our international project for 2001, we're shipping school supplies off to the schools in Havana," explained Aubrey Oppers, an execu- tive member with the Port Perry Rotary Club. The idea began to take shape after Mr. Oppers' wife, Barbara, saw an arti- cle in the Rotarian maga- zine. "She was reading some- thing similar they were doing down in the U.S. and we thought it was a good idea," said Mr. Oppers, who holds the role of Director of International Service with the local club. The effort received blessing from both Canadian and Cuban offi- cials and, as a result, the Port Perry club got to work. Dozens and dozens of pens, pencils, brushes, paint, crayons and other school supplies were pur- chased and, thanks to the generosity of Tony Janssen at Port Perry Printing, a skid of paper was donated. As well, packages of binders were donated to the cause courtesy of Ontario Hydro through the In-Kind Canada program. "We purchased some of it, but there were a lot of great people who helped out with this," said Mr. Oppers. To finally wrap up the effort, Rona-Cashway man- ager John Bouwhuis donat- ed the use of one of his company's trucks, which transported the four one- metre-cubed containers to a shipping firm, where they On Sept. 8, Laszlo Buday's "Chalk Lake Oils in Repousse Frames and Sculpture Mixed Media" launches the new season at the Kent Farndale Gallery in the Scugog KFG to host new show Sept. 8 Public Library, 231 Water Street in Port Perry. Robert Keeler, another local club member, has travelled to the island nation in the past, and is confident the materials will get to their destina- tion, said Mr. Oppers. "He's made a few trips down there and says they seem to be running a fairly decent operation there. We have assurances that the crates will get to where they're supposed to go," he said. In other countries, par- ticularly Africa, most sup- plies shipped in never make it to their intended receivers, explained Mr. Oppers. As for the effort by the club's members, Mr Oppers thanked all those involved. "We started this last fall so it's taken a long time to hear back from (govern- ment) officials and get things in place. But this was something we did in our spare time and it does- n't matter if it takes two months, six months or a year... it's done now and we have to thank everyone for helping out." Scrumptious Soy! by Lyndsay Gower - 3rd Yr. BSC Student Soyfoods have benefited Asian peoples for centuries and these cultures have also had lower rates of some chronic diseases. These occurrences have gained much attention by researchers so soy has been under study, to find the relationship between soy and health. To reduce risk of heart disease (by up to 20-40%), people with elevated blood cholesterol levels can consume soy protein. This directly reduces the level of LDL-cholesterol ("bad-cholesterol") in the blood. For consid- erable results, a large amount of soy protein must be eaten (25g/day or around 3-4 soyfood servings). It is thought that isoflavones in soy decreas- es blood clotting associated with atherosclerosis, by acting as antioxidants. Another potential advantage of soy protein is in its role in treating patients with progressive kidney (renal) disease. Protease inhibitors and soybean isoflavones, weak estrogens, may act as anticarcinogens, which protect against some forms of cancer, such as hor- mone-related cancers including breast cancer and prostatic cancer. Consuming plant pro.ein instead of animal protein has been shown to reduce the loss of calcium from bones and soy itself can help stop bone loss and perhaps increase bane mass. Isoflavones also seem to alter the action of key enzymes causing bone breakdown. Reduction in severity of menopausal symptoms in women has also been seen. Excellent sources are the soyfoods with the least amount of processing, such as soymilk, tempeh, tofu and most soy flours. So try your flare with these products and have some fun while reaping the benefits of this extraordinary food!
