Plowing Match, which is being held in Ottawa from September 18 - 22, Erin will show her skills with the tractor and plow again. This year's annual Durham Region Plowing Contest is being held August 29 to 31 at Picov Farms. Located west of Brooklin, and south of Highway 7 on Cochrane Road, this isn't the first time a plowing match has been held on the farm. Formerly the site of the Heber Down farm, the International Plowing Match was held there in 1956. The Durham Region Plowing Association is also hosting the Canadian Plowing Contest and Farm Festival. "When we heard there was nobody willing to host the Canadian contest we applied for it," says Jim Ferguson, secretary-trea- surer of the Durham Plowmen's Association. Competitors from British Columbia, Alberta, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario will be in the running. Locally, Barry Timbers of Greenbank will be competing in the Senior Canadian Class. Young competitors will be competing for the Junior title. Last year, 21- year-old Eric Ferguson of Sunderland won the Junior Plowman's competition when it was held in Riviere du Loup. Not eligible to compete again this year in the Junior division, Eric will be tilling the land in the next level up. The DRPA is helping the Canadian organization in another way, too. "We are hosting a bar- becue and charity auction to raise funds for the Canadian Plowing Organization too," says Mr. Ferguson. Being held at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Aug. 30 at the cor- ner of Ritson and Winchester Roads, a Massey Harris #26 antique plow will be one of the many items up for auction. Tickets are available from plowing directors or you can purchase them at the door for $10 each. With 150 acres of land available on the farm for both events, this vast area will be featuring farm machinery demonstra- tions daily, a variety of agricultural services and antique exhibits. - Come and see how plowing was done in the pioneer days as horses, antique tractors and plows are demon- strated. For information on the Queen of the Furrow con- test or other inquiries, call Mr. Ferguson at 705-357- 3069. RY ek Sw a bode, Erin Hoskin of Sunderland, the 2000-2001 Durham Region Plowmen's Association Queen of the Furrow, will be competing at the local plowing match August 29 to 31 at Picov's Farm, west of Brooklin. Police to sit down with merchants, youths By Rik Davie Port Perry Star North Durham's top police official wants to sit down with local business owners, residents and the youth to talk about recent problems in the Water St. area. Durham Regional Police Inspector Bill Temple of Q a North Durham's 26 Division told The Star that it is time for "all of the stakeholders here to sit and see if there is common ground." Problems surfaced last month when an altercation between a business owner and several youths result- DURHAM PHARMACY (in the Medical Building) NEW HOURS \lolale f= \VARRN Ba IV §=e F\VARS I= [a MI SH 0101 Friday 9 am. - 6 pm. Recently, the business owner was charged with assault-related offenses stemming from the same incident after private charges were laid by a Justice of the Peace from the Toronto area. Business owners have complained to police that groups of youth loitering in the area of the Water St. plazas have damaged property and intimidated customers and residents of the apartments above the stores. "We have had it with the attitude of some of these young people," said Rick McCoshen, a local busi- ness owner. "There are more good kids out there than bad -- a lot more -- but the few are causing a lot of problems here and we are glad the police moved to help." After initial problems, Durham Regional Police officials stepped up foot patrols in the area and drive-bys by cruisers. Now Insp. Temple said it is time to meet. "There are a lot of emo- tions coming in to play here and | am sure some people feel unfairly treat- ed on both sides of this," he said. "I want to get interactive with this and see how best to solve a problem. | want some peo- ple, on both sides, listen- ing to each other." Insp. Temple said he wants to hear from anyone who would like to partici- pate in a meeting, which he hopes to hold at the Scugog Township offices. "Once we have an idea of the participation we will get | will set a date for this," Insp. Temple said. Persons wanting to con- tact Insp. Temple can do so at 905-579-1520 extension 2672 or by Email at north- durham@police.durham.o n.ca with your comments. Anyone who cannot attend can submit written comments by Email or at the station provided they supply a name and address.
