Scugog firefighters were called to the Chateau Bleau Manor on Ella St. in Port Perry after smoke and flames were reported from one of the home's bedrooms. Firefighters managed to get a woman out of the room and burning and charred debris were thrown on to the lawn as fire crews quickly extin- guished the blaze before it could spread further in the home described as a "halfway house for psychi- atric patients from the Whitby Mental Health hospital Facility," by one source. Durham .Regional Police had already cor- doned off the house for a possible investigation as an air ambulance took the 57-year-old female victim, now on a portable respi- rator, to Humber Valley Hospital in Toronto. Eight other residents of the house were evacu- ated by staff and arrange- ments were made for their shelter while Scugog fire officials sifted through the burned out room in search of a source for the blaze. At press time, fire offi- cials would only say that there was about $10,000 damage to the structure, one of the oldest homes in Port Perry, and that the Ontario Fire Marshall's Office was investigating the cause.
