A public reception with the artist in attendance was also held on Oct. 20. Paper mache is being rediscovered by artists, and the work of people like Jennifer is elevating it to the status of a fresh and exciting art form. Jennifer's vases and ves- sels are organically shaped entirely of paper, and are then finished in rich metallic patinas. Sizes vary from a petite six inches high to a dra- matically tall eight feet and growing. Some of her work is made of paper pulp, a clay-like mixture of recycled paper mixed with adhesives. Jennifer has always worked with found mate- rials. She says, "I have always made things, and especially made things of other things. Objects and materials that have been discarded or aban- doned, I incorporate into something new, some- thing integrated, a whole, and in so doing give them permanence." Her work transforms a humble material and rescues and recreates it. Her pieces are beautiful to look at, but must be touched to truly appreci- ate what they are. A cre- ation resembling a bronze artifact magically transforms into a near- weightless surprise. Jennifer studied pho- tography and textiles at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, and experimen- tal art at the Ontario College of Art She has worked as a prop builder and scenic painter in Toronto before moving to the Lindsay area with her family. She has been experimenting with paper since 1992 from her home and studio, a century old country church. She has had numerous showings of her work throughout Ontario, and it is with pleasure that she is wel- comed to the Kent Farndale Gallery in Port Perry.
