"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 23, 2001 - 21 Port Perry has to come to the rink ready to play MoJacks learn valuable lesson in 7-3 loss to Merchants By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star The Port Perry MoJacks should take a couple of lessons from their play over the weekend -- one good and one bad. First, the good. In skating the Lakefield Chiefs to a 4-4 draw Sunday night in front of a large crowd at the Scugog Arena, the MoJacks may have proven they are capa- ble of defeating the powerful Chiefs, con- sidered one of the "teams to beat" in the Central Jr. C Hockey League this season. And now the bad. In taking a 7-3 drub- bing at the hands of the Little Britain Merchants Saturday night, the MoJacks dis- covered that no team can be taken lightly, even one they downed easily 5-0 just just two weeks prior. If you don't arrive at the rink for every game ready to give a total effort, those two points won't arrive on a silver platter. Against the Chiefs, who defeated the MoJacks back on Oct. 2, Ryan McQuade proved to be the hero of the hour as he netted the tying marker with under a Britain Saturday evening as the Merchants netted five of their seven goals on the power play, and added one short-handed just for good measure. The MoJacks fell behind 2-0 in the first period and were never able to get back in this game, as the Merchants enjoyed as-1 lead after the second period. Captain Adam Jones clicked for a pair for the MoJacks with Steele and Harris get- ting assists on both Jones' markers. Ryan McQuade on the power play from jeremy Ritchie and Jeff Ashton was the other goal scorer. For the Merchants, their veteran captain and "go-to guy" Jon Perrin led the way with a hat trick. Perrin collected three assists as well, for a sparkling six-point outing. Kory Cameron, Steve Gourlie, Jeff Best and Colin Gibbs each had singles to round out the Merchant's scoring. SLAPSHOTS: The Uxbridge Bruins suf- fered their first loss of the season over the weekend as they went down 2-1 to the Georgina Ice. The Port Perry native grabbed a Joos puck off a faceoff deep in the Mojack's zone, then went the length of the ice to beat Jared Ruston cleanly in the Lakefield cage. MoJack's goalie Matt Balser was on his way to the bench for the extra skater Eight-year-old Todd Bruce, left, and brothers aaron and Brandon Van Tol, 7, J are among those who are set to take to the ice for the CanSkate program with | the Port Perry Figure Skating Club. The club is encouraging all KidSkate and CanSkate members to bring a friend skating on Oct. 25 from 4 p.m. to 4:50 p.m., and on Oct. 30 from 6 p.m. to 6:50 p.m. Wear Halloween costumes and enjoy games, prizes and treats. Admission is free. There will be new, revised registration prices for anyone who would like to join and start skating in The MoJacks are right back in the heat of things this week as they travel to Lakefield tonight (Oct. 23) to meet the Chiefs, who no doubt will have Sunday's 4- 4 tie fresh in their minds. Next home action for the Molacks i is this Sunday when the Uxbridge Bruins pay a when McQuade got his unassisted goal. Just four minutes before McQuade's goal, Matt Harris had scored to pull the Mojacks to within one. Darryl Steele and Adam Mercer collected the assists on that one, which came on the power play. Twice in the contest, the Mojacks had fallen behind the Chiefs by a couple of goals, but they were able to come back to tie the affair. The other Port Perry goals, both in the middle frame, came from Steele and Justin Bennett. Mercer helped set up these two markers. The scoring for the Chiefs was spread among four players: Marc Legault, Craig Meredith, Mark Moore and Jason Doherty. The single point keeps Lakefield on pace with Uxbridge for the lead in the Central League with each team having a dozen points. The MoJacks are just two back with 10. It was not pretty for the MoJacks in Little visit to the Scugog Arena for a 7 p.m. start. With the MoJacks trailing the Chiefs and Bruins by just two points, it goes without saying how important these next two games are for the green and white. Uxbridge Bruin's head coach Brad Barton has been suspended for 24 games by the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) for pulling his team off the ice in the third period during a pre-season game in Little Britain. The suspension took effect Friday and runs until Jan. 1, 2002. According to an article published last Friday in the Toronto Sun, Barton, in his sec- ond season as Uxbridge coach, pulled his team in the Sept. 15 game when the Bruins were leading 5-0 with less than 10 minutes left in the game. He is quoted as saying that even though the game was not any rougher than usual, he had a "creeping feeling" that events were going to get out of hand, and he feared for the safety of his players. The girls contin- ued to strive never giving up with Allyson Pehlemann pressing hard to land the second goal assisted by Lesley Donovan early in the third period. This was a very gru- elling experience for all the girls, definitely keep- ing them on their toes throughout the game. Great game Predators.
