"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" CO PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 30, 2001 - 3 «i S.A. Cawker custodian Terry Lea, left, rolled up her sleeve and got a free flu shot from Denise Sampson, a registered nurse with the Durham Regional Health Department, last week. Some turned away as time runs out Record numbers turn out for free Scugog flu clinic By Rik Davie Port Perry Star There were more arms to be vaccinated than time would allow for as Scugog residents turned out in droves for a flu vaccination clinic last week. According to Glendene Collins, spokesperson for 'the Durham Region Health 'Department, last year's record of 400 persons to be vaccinated at-a clinic held at S.A. Cawker Public School was eclipsed by about 170, with 570 per- sons being vaccinated last week against the flu virus before time ran out, leav- ing a large number of folks without their flu shot. "We are certainly going to look at another clinic in the Port Perry area soon," Ms. Collins said. "We have seen the benefit of increased media coverage and the population being more aware of the bt "nefits of the vaccination pro- gram." At the S.A. Cawker clin- ic, people were lined up across the school gym and down the hall with waiting periods reaching one hour. Up to 90 per cent of those who receive the vac- cination escape the virus and even the very small percentage of who develop persons influenza despite vaccination report less-severe symptoms. The elderly and young children are most suscep- tible. It takes two weeks after vaccination for the full effect of immunity to take hold. The Durham Region Health Department reminds residents that you cannot get the flu from the vaccination. Another clinic will be publicized in the Port Perry area and residents can attend any clinic in the region. For times, dates and places please call 905-723- 8521 or 1-800-841-2729. Ward | rep in favour, but Corrigan gets no support Council forgoes opening prayer, ceremonies By J Peter Hvidsten Port Perry Star Although the door was opened for Scugog Council to include prayer or some other type of open- ing ceremony before beginning business, it declined to do so. Chris Hodgson, Ontario's Minister of Municipal Affairs, recently commented that current legislation states, "every council and local board shall adopt a pro- cedure bylaw for governing the calling, place and proceedings of the meetings. This section of the Municipal Act in itself does not prohibit the recitation of the Lord's Prayer at council meetings," he wrote. Ward | Councillor Larry Corrigan said he'd like to see council adopt some kind of an opening ceremony, addressing and respecting the times, heritage and diversity in our culture. "Times call for leadership that encourages respect for all," he said. Councillor Corrigan called for staff to investigate and come back with recommendations regarding an opening ceremony, possibly singing of O"Canada. "That would be cruel," quipped Mayor Doug Moffatt. Councillor Corrigan stood alone on the issue, not being able to get someone to second his motion. Ty CLARIFICATION In the Friday, Oct. 26 edition of The Port Perry Weekend Star, a caption on Page 26 regarding the Oakridge Golf Club was misleading. ' The cutline stated that green fees paid by those dressing up in costume on Oct. 31 would be for- warded to Canadian Red Cross and the USA. Appeal to aid victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. In fact, the caption should have said that all who play the local club on Wednesday will have their green fees donated.
