"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 13, 2001 - 9 BIA hopes to get everyone in the Christmas spirit From Page 1 mittee members that the BIA would like to host a day program in the downtown core on Sunday, Dec. 9. "We want to shut down the streets again and have a breakfast with Santa Claus with tree decorat- ing... we want to have the trees on the street and have fashion models walk around them" said Mr. Bennett. "It's a way to get families to come out again and spend money in the downtown shops." While he applauded the BIA's efforts to dress up Port Perry and attract business, Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt did ask Mr. Bennett to take another look at his plans. "Closing the street off on a Sunday afternoon... | would urge you to revisit that," said the mayor, who suggested that the BIA look at holding their Dec. 9 events in Palmer Park. Mr. Bennett said that his group would consider that suggestion. He added that the BIA would also once again be offering free horse-and-buggy rides, carolers, a turkey draw and the popular Santa Sac raffle. "We have a lot of things happening... we're look- ing for a good season and a good Christmas," he said. Officials attempting to track down data in an effort to get accurate test results From Page 1 make perhaps a | per cent difference overall. In an individual school where there may be results for an entire class missing as has happened in the past, it can make a significant difference in school results." Mr. Yeo also said that the benchmark by which students are graded is confusing to the public. "You have to remember that when we say that 57 per cent of Grade 6 stu- dents met or surpassed the provincial standard in reading, that provincial standard is 70 per cent," Mr. Yeo said. That means up to 80 per cent of the students might have passed the test with 50 per cent or better, because the provincial mark is 70. Mr. Midwood said that the EQAO has moved back its date for releasing final results and that indi- vidual school results will be released to parents as they become available. In the meantime, school officials across the region continue to track down missing data. Mr. Yeo said that there was no way to know when final figures might be available. According to figures. released so far for the public board Grade 6 test results show slight gains in all areas while Grade 3 results show reading scores of 49, meaning that 49 per cent met or exceeded 70 per cent on the test. Figures for writing showed that 52 per cent of the students scored high- er than 70 per cent; math results showed that 61 per cent of the students reached or exceeded the Got a letter for the editor or a comment?
