The group of 21 people arrived in Cuba and were told they were not going to be able to stay at their orig- inal destination and were taken to another large hotel situated on higher ground due to Hurricane Michelle. By late Saturday afternoon the family were in their rooms and for most of Sunday they were allowed outside while the winds blew stronger and the waves got bigger. By 4 p.m. the hotel was boarded up on the bottom floor while guests had to stay inside for safety precautions. Two hours later all the guests were asked to stay in their rooms until the storm had past, and, at 7p.m., a picnic lunch was brought to each room because everything was being shut down. By 10p.m., the centre of Hurricane Michelle blew threw and an alarm sounded for peo- ple to go into the washroom. The Hvidstens went into their washrooms, which Peter Hvidsten CLINIC Nov. 18, 2001 10am-12pm What About Artificial Sweetners? by Bronwen Tuck Currently five artificial sweeteners have been approved for use by Health and Welfare Canada as safe alternatives to table sugar. It is very versatile in hot and cold foods. o Acesulfame Potassium is marketed as Sunett and is the latest artificial sweetener to be approved by Health Canada for use in beverages, baked goods, tabletop sweeteners and candy. After rigorous testing these sweeteners have been approved for use by all Canadians. All available scientific data on effectiveness and safety is considered and regulations are then developed to identify how sweeten- ers may be used and what amounts are allowed. For some, its simply a personal choice about whether to include artificial sweeteners in the diet. Remember, when used in moderation, artificial sweeteners can increase enjoyment and variety of a balanced diet based on Canadas Food Guide to Healthy Eating. Jamie and Katie fell asleep around the start of the high point of the storm, which ran from around |1lp.m. to about 2 a.m. with winds exceeding 225 kilometers per hour. The hallway that the Hvidsten family was in started to flood through the exit door and Nancy and Peter left the children in the washroom due to lack of space and set up a boxspring against the window and put a bed on the other side for support while they slept on the mat- tress. By morning the winds had subsided substantially and around 10 a.m. the guests were allowed to go out- side. The family walked to the beach, which was almost destroyed. There was a lot of erosion and there was debris everywhere; the swimming pools that were once a nice deep blue colour were now dark green, and everywhere you looked there were up- rooted palm trees, and the hotel had some exterior structural damage, said Mr. Hvidsten. The Hvidstens stayed at the hotel for two days until the storm passed, and then they moved to a dif- ferent resort nearby for the remainder of the holiday and the wedding. "Yeah, the holiday was more than we bargained for," said Peter. "No one was hurt and we got home safely... it will be a trip to always remember."
