"Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" Graduates honoured at commencement On a clear, crisp autumn morning, a capacity crowd attended the Remembrance Day Service in Blackstock on Sunday. This impressive service was held in the Rec. Centre. Rev. Karen Bursey conducted the service and gave the most thoughtful message. Mayor Doug Moffatt brought greetings from the Township of Scugog. Music was led by the members . of the Blackstock United Church choir who sang an appropriate anthem.. Following the service, the crowd paraded to the Cenotaph where the service continued with the reading of the Honour Roll, The Last Post, the Period of Silence and the Laying of Wreaths. A morning to remember. Tallya Moore has returned from a memorable five week holiday to Australia and New Zealand with her sister Mary Jonah. One highlight of a great holiday was the meeting of nine cousins whom the sisters had never met before. This wonder- ful family time together was on the Sunshine Coast. Mary and Tallya also visited many, many points of interest in both coun- tries. Plan now to attend the won- derful craft sale sponsored by the Senior Music Band of the Cartwright High School on Sunday, Nov. 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Rec. Centre. A huge variety of Christmas crafts will be for sale by the many ven- dors. As well a tasty lunch will be available. This is a great opportunity to support the stu- dents of our local school. Nancy and Bob Bryans recently travelled to Pembroke to visit Earlene and Garry Card. They met in February as table mates on the cruise ship Sun Cruises "Sunbird." Mid-week guests of Cecil and Marie Gibson were their friends Ross and Irene Vanclief of Corbyville. On Tuesday, Bob and Alice Johnston of Peterborough joined the group for noon dinner guests. On Friday evening, Gerald and Joyce Kelly attended the visitation at the Fenelon Falls funeral chapel for the late Jack Wallace who had been the prin- cipal of Brooklin Public School while Joyce taught there. Recent supper guests with Nancy and Bob Bryans of Cadmus were friends Bonnie and Roger Lafontaine of Courtice along with Lucy and Myles Woods of Cavan. Any men who wish to curl on Monday evenings, there are still openings in that league. This is a great opportunity to learn as well as to enjoy some curling for the experienced curlers. A family supper was held at Gord and Debbie Bryans' farm on Gray Road. Birthdays cele- brated were Christina's 14th and Patti Alpe's earlier in October. Nancy and Bob Bryans along with Patti, Nathan and Emma Alpe along with Leanna Bryans home from college in King City all were guests. Jill and Mike Davidson of BLACKSTOCK by Joyce Kelly Bermuda are visiting Jill's par- ents Ruby and Richard VanCamp and other relatives and friends. Welcome back, Jill and Mike. The Cartwright High School Commencement Exercises attracted a capacity crowd on Friday evening. Following the opening ceremonies with greet- ings from the Principal Karen Allan, Prime Minister of Student Council, Kyle Vernest and Trustee Martin Demmers awards were presented. Highest Grade Average were: Grade 9 - Janice Kadowaki; Grade 10 - Robert Larmer; Grade 11 - Laura Batternick; Grade 12 - Corinna Bauer and OAC - Cameron Vernest. Most Improved Students - Female - Andrea Stephenson; Male - Brian Wonnacott. Proficiency prizes for Grade 9 were won by Jenna Lasky, Jordyn Clark and Janice Kadowaki. Grade 10 proficiency winners were Robert Larmer, Matthew Garason, Heather Poole, Alex DeJong, Lisa Danilko, Brad Taylor and John Wotten. Proficiency prize winners in Grade Il were Catherine DeJong, Laura Batternick, Shane Hart, Justin Demille, Michell Noseworthy, Alaina Burger, Katherine Walhout, Dawn Hall and Michelle Halligan. Winners for Grade 12 were Chris Brunet, Laura Batternick, Shane Hart, Dawn Hall, Corinna Bauer, Joanne Benschop and Jill Pashley. OAC Proficiency Awards were won by Chris Harris, Amie Elliott, Mark Walhout, Paul Asnger, Catherine DeJong, David Fallis, Rebecca Barnhoorn, and Cameron Vernest. Art awards were won by Jennifer Danilko, Kiley Rundle, and Dawn Hall. Music awards were won by Heather Poole, Mark Walhout, Lindsay Cooper, Matthew Garason and Cameron Vernest. Cameron Vernest won the Athletic Council Award while Carla McLaughlin won both the Top Graduating Physical Education Student and the Students' Council Prime Minister Recognition Award. Honour Awards were present- ed to students of all grades. Mrs. Turner presented Duke of Edinburgh Awards after which school letters were presented. Community Service Certificates were presented to Joshua Elliott, Melissa Harnden, Janice Kadowaki, Jenna Lasky, Matthew Power, Elyse Thomson, Mitch Truax and Sean Winter. Omario Secondary School Diplomas were presented to Paul Anger, Rebecca Barnhoorn, Kyle Barriage, David Carnaghan, Dan Deeth, Gayle Dingman, Amie Elliott, David Fallis, David Fisher, Sterling Graham, John Gunther, Dawn Hall, Adam Hancock, Chris Harris, Zsuzsanna Homonnai, Elisha James, Jeremy Johns, Drew Jones, Kori Killen, Meghan Kyte, Emily Lamb, Kyle McClurg, Carla McLaughlin, Kristy Micklewright, Gail Panchuk, Karly Spunde, Andrea Stephenson, Jocelyn Thomson, Jaclyn Vanschagen, Cameron Vernest, Mark Walhout, Ryan Whittick, Robert Wolters and Brian Wonnacott. Many bursaries were pre- sented to the graduates after which Carla McLaughlin deliv- ered an excellent valedictory address. Following the singing of God Save the Queen, a reception was held for the graduates. and their guests at the Cartwright High School. Congratulations to all of the 2001 graduates of Cartwright High School. Blackstock W.I. About 20 people enjoyed an interesting and vital talk by Doug Brown. He is the head pharmacist at one of the local drug stores. This was another in a series of talks that we hope to have which is part of the R.O.S.E. program of the FW.I.O. We hope that people came away with a greater understand- ing of their pharmacists job and their own responsibility in regards to medications. The Fidelis Unit U.C.W. held a very interesting meeting on Wednesday with Pac Milner as speaker. She told much about the life of L.M. Montgomery. The group in charge held a very impressive In Memoriam in remembrance of Jean Kerry. Margaret Couperthwaite attended the Agincourt High School Reunion Memorial on Friday and visited a number of shut-in friends before returning home. The Sunday School Christmas Concert, featuring recitations, carols, skits and Greenbank Puppets will be on Friday, Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Greenbank Church. Any G.YA. member of high school age youth interested in participating in "a total art expe- rience" on Saturday, Dec. | from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. is asked to sign was piper Mr. Drew Mcintosh who played Amazing Grace on the bagpipes which added much to our Remembrance Day Service.
