Township officials fuming Vandals strike Union Avenue sidewalk By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Township officials could be looking at a huge repair bill if the munici- pality has to clean up after some vandals who appear to have had some fun last Thursday night. Scugog"s Director of Public Works, Larry Postill, was fuming mad Friday morning after being informed that van- dals had slogged their way through a stretch of freshly-poured concrete meant to become a side- walk on Union Avenue. Mr. Postill said that the concrete had been poured on Thursday (Nov. 22) on the east side of Union Ave. between Major St. and Earl Cuddie Blvd. and left overnight to harden. Construction crews dis- covered the vandalism early Friday morning. "We just poured the cement; the residents there had been on us for a long time, all summer long, to get a sidewalk in there," said Mr. Postill, who speculated that the damage was done by a group of youngsters look- i~g to kill time. "We pulled all the strings we could to get the funding and people in place to get these side- walks poured and then (they're hit by vandals)." The damage consisted of foot prints and names being signed in the still- soft concrete. "The contractor (North Ridge) was quite upset when it was found; they're excellent people and they put a lot of projects on the backburner to do this for us," said Mr Postill. He added that approx- imately 132 metres of sidewalk were damaged. The cost of installing side- walk segments is $87 per linear metre, said Mr Postill. As for repairing and continuing on with 'the sidewalk work, the public works director said that is now up in the air. "Timing is part of it -- we may not have the time to finish it -- but this van- dalism will definitely put a full stop to it for now," he said. - www.portperrystar.com Ist Port Perry Scouts Christmas Trees located at Reid's Independent Sunday, November 25th to Wednesday, December | 9th Monday - Friday 4:30 - 8:30 pm.
