PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 18, 2001 -17 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" MoJacks Junior 'C' MoJacks melt the Ice, get clawed by Bruins By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star The Port Perry MoJacks left the best for last Sunday night at the Scugog Arena when they struggled back for a narrow 2-1 victory over the Georgina Ice. They will gladly take the two points as the win came on the heels of a 3-1 loss Friday night to the first-place Uxbridge Bruins, the only team in the Central Junior' C League that has given the MoJacks seri- ous trouble this season. MoJack's head coach Neil Evans said there may be a silver lining from the Bruins game as the MoJacks had numer- ous fine scoring chances and clearly played well enough to win. "I think the game will be a good confi- dence builder for us. We definitely out- played them but just could not get the puck in the net," he told The Port Perry Star afterwards. "A lot of positive things could come out of that game," he said. On Sunday night against the fourth- place Ice, who came into the game eight points back of the second-place MoJacks, Callum Marshall broke a 1-1 deadlock with under seven minutes left in the third to lift the MoJacks into the win. Marshall worked his way out from behind the Ice net, found a bit of skating room and lifted a backhander past net- minder Alex Lupo. Brent Stokes earned an assist on the goal and it was Stokes who had tied the game a few minutes earlier. He made a nice move to get around the Ice defence and drilled a shot from a fairly sharp angle that somehow found the comer of the cage. The Ice had taken a 1-0 lead early in the second period on a power play effort by Derek Hill. The Georgina squad, usually known for a speed and finesse style of hockey, changed tactics against the Mojacks in this one by using the body at every opportunity. While the MoJacks never backed away from the physical stuff, Coach Evans said the tactics may have thrown his team off balance. "We fought it off and came through in the end. | thought it was the best effort by Georgina against us so far this season," he noted. The Georgina players might have been upset by a call very early in the game in which Trevor Sedore was ejected for checking from behind. He's their leading scorer and the call came just before the five minute mark of the first period. The MoJack player knocked head first into the boards was not hurt on the play and Sedore was also assessed a two-minute minor. The MoJacks also took several penal- ties and a string of them in the middle frame clearly upset their momentum and led to the only Georgina goal. Were it not for some strong penalty killing the Ice could have jumped into a wider lead. Matt Balser turned in a steady game for the MoJacks in the goal while Lupo at the other end of the rink also came up with numerous good saves to keep the Ice in the contest. Ryan McQuade netted the lone Mojack goal Friday night against the Bruins, but he could have had two or three more as he was snake-bitten on several break- aways. McQuade, a graduate of the Port Perry Minor system, is about as pure a goal scorer as the MoJacks have on the roster. He showed another side of his game Sunday night when he threw himself in front of a hard slap shot in the final sec- onds of the game. The puck caught him squarely on the right ankle and he was down in consider- able pain for several minutes before being helped off. The ankle was badly swollen after the game but apparently the injury is just a bad bruise. It may keep him out of Monday night's game against the Bullets in Bobcaygeon. The MoJacks have been hit by the injury bug lately as Matt Harris has been out with an arm injury and Nathan Cotter is recovering from an eye injury suffered in a ball hockey match at his high school. Coach Evans said both could return to the lineup for the two games on tap this weekend. SLAPSHOTS: There was a good crowd out for Sunday night's game against the Ice as it was the annual MoJack Family Christmas Night. Fans were very generous with dona- tions of toys and food which will be dis- tributed by the Durham Police for Christmas. In other action around the League, Georgina downed Bobcaygeon 5-4 and Little Britain nipped Uxbridge 3-2. A week ago, the Bruins clobbered the Merchants 13-1. The MoJacks are busy prior to the Christmas break as they were in Bobcaygeon Monday night, travel to Sutton for a re-match with the Ice this coming Friday and on Sunday will host the Campbellford Rebels of the Eastern Empire League. This is the only time the second-place Rebels will be at the Scugog Arena this season as part of the home-and-home series with teams in the Central Jr. C League. Face off at the Scugog Arena is 7 p.m. CHRIS HALL / PORT PERRY STAR The Port Perry Curling Club was one of the host venues for the regional play- downs for the upcoming Ontario Scott Tournament of Hearts Provincial Final in Thunder Bay, which will run from Jan. 22 to 26. A total of eight teams began play Friday. Here, the Oakville rink takes on their Toronto rivals. Port Perry Midgets lose 4-3 to Uxbridge The Optimist midgets rallied to capture the A Championship title at the Oshawa Tournament this past weekend December 6-9, by winning all of their games. The Optimist Stars came from behind to capture the 4-3 win against Port Perry in the championship game with Steven Nagymarosi putting the first marker of the game on the board with Christopher Harrison and Justin McDonald assisting. Port Perry came back a minute later to tie the game only to have McDonald take Uxbridge's second goal with Nagymarosi and Harrison assisting. During the sec- ond period, Port Perry came back with 2 more goals to take the tying and go ahead goal. Uxbridge put on a strong perfor- mance during the third period as McDonald net- ted the tying goal on a pass from Mike Boyce and Harrison. As the clock was ticking, and with only 1:36 left in game. time, Mike Boyce netted the winning goal for Uxbridge to win the championship game and was awarded MVP. Nagymarosi earned 2 hat tricks and 9 assists, Harrison had 3 goals 8 assists, McDonald 2 goals 9 assists, Trevor Timbers and Mike Boyce each had 2 goals | assist, Mark Boyce earned 2 goals, Andrew Ramsey, Alex Catherwood and Strolenberg each earned | goal | assist, Dan Wagner, Jamie Reinders earned a goal each with Matt Morrison and Mike Hamilton earning an assist. The team continued the struggle and played tough with Allyson Pehlemann landing a brilliant goal with Lesley Donovan at her side, Keep up the great work Peewees!
