An off-duty Durham Regional Police officer, 26-year- old Scott Airey of Oshawa, has been charged with care- less driving. The charge comes on the heels of a three- month investigation by officers of the Ontario Provincial Police. Evan Huntington was a passenger in a station wagon driven by his aunt, 49-year-old Janice Huntington of Janetville. Also in the vehicle was the boy's grandmother, a cousin and his 11-year-old sister. The force of the collision flipped the pickup truck being driven by Mr. Airey onto its back and ejected the five-year-old boy from the rear of the vehicle despite reports that he was wearing a seatbelt. Evan Huntington died of his injuries shortly after arrival at Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay. All the other occupants of both vehicles sustained minor injuries and were released from hospital the same day. OPP investigators seized both vehicles and the seat belt assemblies from the Huntington car as part of their investigation and had been telling members of the media for more than a month that charges were pending. Korin Huntington, Evan's mother, told The Star recent- ly that she is concerned over the time it has taken to lay charges. "We have no animosity towards the driver, but we are fast developing some for the system," Ms. Huntington said. Ted Schendara, media liaison officer for the City of Kawartha Lakes OPP detachment, has told The Star that a thorough investigation was carried out to determine the circumstances of the accident. Fletcher Funeral Director Scugog Township Council Briefs ANIMAL CONTROL REPORT More than 80 animals were impounded by the Uxbridge-Scugog Animal Centre during the month of November and of that number almost 70 per cent came from Scugog Township. In the monthly report to Scugog Council, Animal Control Officer Shirley Kohler reported 27 dogs and 39 cats from Scugog were impounded, along with six | dogs and 20 cats from Uxbridge. Of the total number of cats and dogs at the cen- tre, coincidently, 19 dogs and 19 cats were adopted and of those remaining, two dogs and 20 cats were euthanized. The animal centre also reports that there were 644 calls to the shelter and 565 visitors during the month. Still impounded, as of the end of November, were three dogs and 15 cats. Tag sales for the month totaled 132, with $40 from Uxbridge and $92 from Scugog. There were $1,470 in pound fees and donations for the month totalling $320. FISHING WEEKEND A steering committee for Ontario Family Fishing Weekend are asking Scugog Township and other Ontario communities to help publicize the popular summer event. Organized by the Ontario Federation of Anglcrs and Hunters along with the Province of Ontario, the special license-free fishing weekend will take place this summer from Friday, July 5 though to Sunday, July 7. The group has asked Scugog to help publicize the event with advertising in the township's calen- dar of summer events and by declaring the week- end Ontario Family Fishing Weekend in Scugog Township. MORE PARKING Albert Putsey, writing on behalf of the Caesarea Ratepayers' Association, has requested Scugog Township purchase a piece of property about one block south of the Caesarea dock for additional parking. Mr. Putsey says the ratepayers committee cannot seen any sense in using the property for recreation- al use other than a "pay as you use" parking lot for visitors who transport their boats and snowmobiles and leave their cars and trailers along the street. He points out that at times parking extends along most of Pier St. and east and west on Centre St., with many of the vehicles parked on the pavement. He suggested the township consider putting in a bid for the former Donasco property. PADDLE AROUND LAKE SIMCOE The Lake Simcoe Conservation Authority is ask- ing Scugog Township for its support in adopting the Paddle Around Lake Simcoe project. Simply known as PALS, the project proposes six youth, aged 18 to 27, spend two months circumnav- igating Lake Simcoe in canoes to raise awareness about the state of the lake and its phosphorus pol- lution problems. The participants will discuss the problem with homeowners and offer simple solutions. The program recently got the "thumbs up" from Uxbridge Township council, who endorsed an appli- cation by PALS to Human Resources Development Canada for funding towards the project. Scugog Council has been asked to assist the ini- tiative by providing a similar letter of support. ARENA EXPANSION MEETING Ron Compton and Brian Callery will head up the drive to build a second ice pad at the Scugog Arena. The two men were appointed co-chairs of the Expansion Steering Committee at a meeting held on Dec. 5. Other officers on the committee include Paul VanCamp, financial reporter, Jay Todd, munici- pal liaison, and Brenda Robinson, recording secre- tary. Mr Compton reported he is working on a general financial model that will be used for all fundraising proposals and will clearly define income/expense information and objectives.
